Good News-Bad News

From Inside Radio

Citadel's Farid Suleman previews possible station selloffs, ahead of the ABC merger. They've already been approached about stations in "certain markets that we would not consider core markets." But Suleman firmly says - several times - he's excited about the growth opportunities with ABC Radio Networks, including using the merged platform to nurture talent in smaller markets. Citadel reports Q4 net revenues down 1.4% - but expects early 2006 to be up 2%.

The bad news, just what might be considered "certain markets?" Buffalo? Syracuse? Ithaca? Binghamton? Erie? The potential "good news?" Guys like Shredd & Ragan might be doing their show in NYC and Detroit on the "merged platform."

...or the potential bad news:

With the "merged platform", the talent currently on ABC's major market stations may find some smaller outlets to be syndicated/simulcast on.

Syndication is usually from the top down---not the other way around.

I think you'd have to look at regional concentrations, and at the facilities in each market. In NY, for example, Buffalo is a very strong cluster. Syracuse is a cluster-f*ck. Binghamton is strong. Ithaca's a small market with only one Citadel station, which is doing OK. I could see that generating a little cash in a sale to Backyard Broadcasting, giving them a two-station cluster. On the other hand, Ithaca isn't that far from either Syracuse or Binghamton, so some of the overhead can be cut by regionalizing billing, traffic, and other services.

Purchases almost invariably mean some kind of cost-cutting somewhere. Let's just say that I wouldn't put a down-payment on a house if I was working at an underperforming or signal-challenged cluster in a market where Citadel didn't have dominance.

As far as syndication goes, I'd be a lot less surprised to hear "Scott (Shannon) and Todd" or "Mark & Brian" on Citadel stations around the country that to hear "Shredd and Ragan" in NYC.

Re: When Was the Last Time a Purchase Brought GOOD News?

But when we talk about Today's Shred and Regan, are they a Buffalo Morning show?
Or is the content of the show filled with programming that can go coast to coast at the flick of a switch?
Can some content be droped and replaced with other more national content...or are "Shed and company" still strict with the idea that their morning show content is VERY Buffalo?

I would hope they're still a Buffalo talk storm, but respectfully, they just may be more useful than Bob and Tom (for example) in a coast to coast environment...(and/or the best option to compete with B&T)<P ID="signature">______________

Show content and host talent are two entirely different issues.

Point respectfully made, but not clearly. Does this mean that one has to be a rock star to go coast to coast?
What is being said in respect to why Shred and company may not be the right host talent(s)?
