GOOD NEWS!!; WFIL and WNTP to carry Penn football this season

Remember a while back I was complaining about the fact that the penn quakers football team for many years has aired their football games on poor signaled stations, well guess what:
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania has announced that radio stations WNTP 990 AM and WFIL 560 AM will carry all 10 of Penn’s football games live in 2006. Each game will also be webcast live at www.PennAthletics.com as part of the Penn Sports Network.

The radio team of Matt Leon, Hench Murray and Brian Seltzer will continue to call the action for the Quakers. Leon enters his third season at play-by-play alongside Murray, who is in his 24th season providing color commentary. Seltzer is in his third season as the broadcast team’s sideline reporter.

Both WNTP and WFIL provide full coverage of the city of Philadelphia and its surrounding counties. WNTP and WFIL are sister stations owned by Salem Communications.

“We are thrilled to be partnered with a university of Penn’s caliber,” said Russ Whitnah, vice president and general manager of WNTP and WFIL. “We look forward to working with Penn this season and hopefully for many more to come.”

2006 Penn Football Schedule

Sept. 16 at Lafayette 1 p.m.
Sept. 23 VILLANOVA 7 p.m.
Sept. 30 DARTMOUTH 1 p.m.
Oct. 7 at Bucknell 1 p.m.
Oct. 14 COLUMBIA 1 p.m.
Oct. 21 at Yale 12:30 p.m.
Oct. 28 BROWN Noon
Nov. 4 at Princeton 1 p.m.
Nov. 11 HARVARD 1 p.m.
Nov. 18 at Cornell 1 p.m.

Not sure what the details of the press release mean, but WNTP is carrying Penn State football this year instead of WFIL, so I would think all the Penn games will be on WFIL and not on WNTP.

Julius, you almost had me excited. The full headline got cut off on the main page and I thought you might really have good news.
Like Salem sells WFIL and WNTP.
Or WFIL and WNTP flip to Oldies; go back to their original playlists from the glory years (Real Oldies on 99; Oldies on 56). Original sounds to be re-created.
Or WFIL flips to progressive talk; WNTP takes Fonda-Steinham fem-lib talk.

But Ivy League football? Please. Nobody has paid attention to Ivy League football for 50 years or more - except students and alums - and as I recall, you are neither.

Now, Big 10 Football: That's different. Here is the Penn State Info.
WAEB-AM (790) Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton
WLPA-AM (1490) Lancaster
WNPV-AM (1440) Lansdale
WVNJ-AM (1160) New York, NY/North Jersey
WNTP (990) Philadelphia
WPAZ-AM (1370) Pottstown
WRAW-AM (1340) Reading
WCZT-FM (98.7) Wildwood/Jersey Shore, NJ
WWTX-AM (1290) Wilmington, DE

Now Julius, how can WNTP carry BOTH Penn and Penn State (and why would Salem put the same game on both stations)?

990 AM is carrying all Penn state football games this season. All 10 Penn football games will be heard on either WNTP 990 AM or sister station WFIL 560 AM this season.

Re: More Football

[Princeton - WHWH1350]

WHWH went dark several months ago. The Princeton website says the games in 2006 are on WBUD & online.
Also, in state university games, WEEU has Kutztown U, WCOJ West Chester U. Delaware Valley apparently steams live online, also (they used to be live on WBUX r.i.p. then WNPV until they picked up PSU). Moravian games are now on WYHM.

Are you forgetting that WPRB carry princeton sports too

...But we do care about YOU Shawn. So glad to see that everything is okay. It's been several days since you sent one of your ridiculous, childish replies to one of Julius's messages.

In fact, some people might care about Julius's post...Please don't speak for everyone. Also, why not take your own advice (the same advice you send out to Julius), if your post serves as nothing but an outlet for you to say something no one else cares about...Keep it to yourself.

You criticize me..and you're probably just another message board troll with several screen names. (The Kylefree and Red & Nater boards shut down some time ago...sorry there is no where else for immature, unprofessional people like you to poison message boards). So, what you say means nothing to me. When you learn to stick to one screen name for multiple years (as I have) then maybe I will consider what you say as important. Have a nice day.

As Fred said, there has been little or no interest in Ivy League football, except maybe for alumni. Even the students barely care anymore. At least at Brown University, they don't get huge crowds (despite the Bears winning the Ivy League championship last season).

Shawn,

I'll give you credit this time for not making a blanket statement. "Little or no interest," okay...But that's not the same as "nobody cares."

You were also careful to say I'm "probably" just a troll with many names. Truth is, this is the only name I've used. I often read but seldom post. As I said a few weeks back (possibly my last post), I know WHO a few of the people on this board are, but don't know any of them personally. I've worked in the Philadelphia and Wilmington markets consistently for 20 years and am very happy. I've worked for my share of horrible PDs, and intolerable co-workers, as well as some really great people.

I'm sorry I threw that dart at you in my last post, but I just don't get why so much of what Julius says bothers you so much. That said, quoting the great "Dirty Dancing," "When I'm wrong, I say I'm wrong."

Okay, now I've done another thing that annoys a lot of people...I'm totally off the subject, so I apologize for that too.

Actually, you should say that YOU don't care. You always go off topic. If you have nothing worthy to contribute, I'd recommend you not post. Why so negative? What's YOUR problem? And please don't complain about Julius. I'm not attacking you, I'm just curious.

I can't believe how all of Julius's simple posts grow to 7 pages with people fighting over him. More often then not, its Shawn starting it. Saying that "nobody cares" is insane. Obviously Julius does, and the main point is that this is news about local radio stations. Julius was simply sharing with us, and also sharing how he was pleased with it being he is a fan. Honestly, I DONT EVEN CARE what sports are playing where, but its valid information about local stations so im not going to tell Julius to shut up. Im just glad that Julius is willing to post about anything other than how much he hates any given race (not saying you hate any ethnic groups Julius, just describing half the topics i see). And i find it hilarious that in some of his own topics, after the little Julius wars, he has to kindly ask you guys to stay on topic. If you dont like Julius or any of his topics, thats FINE, and its your right to dislike whatever you want. But dont ruin the board and HIS TOPICS by throwing your useless two cents in. Shawn (and the others who hate Julius so very much), i propose an idea. Beside the topic title is the author's name. I kindly ask you that if you see Julius's name, dont even bother with his posts. All of your replys just bash him, and it destroys his goal and WHAT EVERYONES GOAL ON THIS SITE SHOULD BE-TO DISCUSS RADIO AND TV, BOTH LOCAL AND NATIONAL. Not to fight and agrue about each other. To discuss what we're passionate about, to disagree and to agree, and to just have fun.

I do not hate Julius at all. I never have hated him, and I never will hate him. I have publicly commended Julius several times over the years for his love and interest for television and radio. I have even offered to purchase blank audio tapes for him to roll on Airchecks of every station in the Market (which he turned down my legitimate offer). However, you people seem to always ignore that. The only time the trolls come out of the woodwork is when someone complains about Julius. I admit that I am the one who publicly complains about him the most...however, I am not the only one who does it. Others have publicly complained about him too...and have asked him nicely to stop his silly behavior. I feel Julius doesn't really give a crap about Penn football or any of the other topics he brings up. I feel he just brings up these outlandish, obscure topics to get people going...posting just for the sake of posting. I have no problems with Julius discussing what schools are on what station, but it really gets old when the guy never lets it go. He rambles on day after day over the same thing, after we all have given him reasonable responses to his concerns. He keeps going and going because we aren't giving him the answers he wants. Not everyone cares about what he cares about. He has been told several times by others that just because he thinks something is important doesn't mean we all are going to have an orgasm over it.

You want to get back on topic...then I'll get back on topic of Penn football on the radio: how will the ratings be this year for the Quakers broadcasts? What does you think? Why or why not?

DERadio: thank you for your comments...and for clearing up our end of the off-topic discussion. Yes, I have worked for my share of horrible managers and have had crappy co-workers as well. Who hasn't?!?! When I read your other post, my first thought was "Who the hell is this guy to critcize me when he has only three posts?" Then I thought you were just another troll, who posts under several different names. You say you barely post here...and I believe you. That's cool.

The truth is Julius is easy to pick on.
He's a visible target. He doesn't fight back. He keeps coming back for more.
This board turns into 3rd grade recess.

What's interesting is others here have their own peculiar interests and fascinations in radio but they don't get the heat Julius does.

Not everyone has to care about the topic of every thread. There is enough bandwidth to go around. As I noted in other current thread, some people do have an impulse to say anything they don't like or agree with should not exist. (Note: I don't like Sushi but I don't campaign against Sushi restaurants.)

FTR Julius has been pointing out the decline in the quality of KYW's on-air product for at least three or four years. He got beat up for that for a quite a while but lately he's been getting a good deal of agreement.

And the reason "nobody listens" and "nobody cares" about radio sports play by play is the same reason listeners (at least White middle class listeners) are tuning out on music radio: it's not good; it's not interesting any more. Play by play men used to be able to create the game for radio so you could "see" it better on TV - certainly "get" it better than on TV. Merrill Reese still demonstrates that's possible for Iggles football now, as it was in Bill Campbell's day. Vin Scully is the only good play by play announcer left in baseball. The rest are a sorry lot.
