A few single edits that I actually prefer to the long version

Green Eyed Lady - Sugarloaf.
IMHO the long version just goes on and on while the single keeps things moving along quite nicely.

Hold Your Head Up - Argent
Again I feel the single eliminates some long uninspired instrumental bridges.

Do You Feel Like We Do - Peter Frampton
From 17 minutes of pure boredom to a fairly crisp 6:45 on the single. I am still amazed the crowd cheered for all that guitar "voicebox" nonsense. Drugs and rock and roll on display.

Sometimes I like the album version but if I want a really good drum solo there's always In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

Life's Been Good - Joe Walsh
I used to play my own edit splicing the extended intro of the album track just in front of the single. Otherwise I felt the album version just took forever to play.

"Susan" by the Buckinghhams. Even the members of the group didn't understand the susupense in that.
 
What about the "radio station only" edit of Whole Lotta Love-Led Zepplin?
I like the full version. I have a copy of it on a single as well as LZ II.

Wasn't the edit only on promo copies? Even the edit sounded awkward, but at least it got rid of that pseudo-psychedelic interlude.
 
The edited version of Magic Carpet Ride was better, cutting out the psychadelic instrumental stuff in the middle. Also Rare Earth's "I Know I'm Losing You" is much better in the version edited for radio airplay.

I agree, not a great edit. I much prefer the full version.

Another edit that just grates on me is Black Magic Woman. The single chops the great guitar solo at the end. I've noticed that Sirius' 60's Vibrations insists on play that gawdawful edit.

I think the guitar solo you're describing at the end of Santana's version of "Black Magic Woman" is actually a different track called "Gypsy Queen" on the album, though they are meant to segue with no division.

The single is just "Black Magic Woman" without "Gypsy Queen", and it fades before the transition.

That got played on AOR stations back in the day, and still occasionally on some of the more adventurous Classic Rock stations.

I occasionally like to get out my old Doors 45 of "Light My Fire" and from my 80s CHR days, the 45 edit of "Kirie" by Mr. Mister is much better than the LP version.

The label said 5;35 giving one the impression trhat the LP track was used yet I believe even the commercfial 7" single was edited. :(

This may had been a factor in the refusal to issue Stairway as a 7" single
 
Without pulling my single and looking, I think 5:35 was the length of the commercial single. There was a radio station edit single that was played on WABC. It cuts out the "psychodelic" part of the song.

My single is the same as the album.
