Good Stations for Apprenticeships?

Hey Everyone,

I just finished my freshman year at Rhode Island College and I was wondering if anyone knew of any stations around that offered any good apprenticeships.

My main goal right now is to become an on air DJ. Eventhough I have never touched a piece of radio equipment in my life, I have always had a strong interest in radio and being on air becuase I love music and why the hell not be a DJ because you get to work with music, and meet and interact with lots of people.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

While it's a great idea to try to get an internship (not an apprenticeship) at a local radio station, why not try getting on the air on the Rhode Island College station first? That way, you would get your hands on radio equipment and it would give you some type of experience before going into a commercial station for an internship. Just my thoughts. Good luck.

Jordan, if you go to any of the Clear Channel websites in Providence like
http://whjy.com/main.html
& click on "employment", there's info on interning. I'm not sure if any stations take you on unless you're getting school credit. Also, since you go to RIC, have you at least tried getting some experience in college radio?

Shawn posted a similar reply as I was replying.

Both Shawn and Runrigger are correct... College radio is going to get you experience... especially the station at RIC... There are more than a handful of people who work in Providence/Boston media who passed through the hallowed halls of WXIN at RIC: Davey Morris (ProFM), Mike Montecalvo (Eyewitness News), John DePetro (WHJJ and now WRKO), Bill George (PD of WHJJ), Jeff Derderian (formerly of ABC6, 7News, and briefly Eyewitness News), Matt Allen (WPRO), the music director up at Kiss108 (I can't place his name at the moment...), Doctor Metal (may he rest in peace...) and many more across the country...

So my advice to you is to take advantage of the station there at RIC... Putting those call letters on a resume could mean something to a local PD or someone else who's hiring around the area... And if you're looking for an internship... do college radio first... it really helps when an intern has some experience and has an inkling about what's going on... you're a sophomore... so do a year at the college station, maybe two... and then apply for an internship...

Thanks for all your suggestions..they were greatly appreciated. Now I have a better idea of what to be looking for.
