Good Wifi Radio?

MUST have:
- AAC+ V2 support
- WPA2 support
- manual input stream URL
- line out

NICE to have:
- RJ45 for wired network
- sp/dif out

Better if NOT, but OK if it does:
- built in amp and speaker(s)

Anyone has any experience with a model that supports those demands?

First part was lost:

I've been looking for a model but good information about supported wifi- and streaming protocols is hard to find, and trying to find out if there is a possibilty to manually add a station is even harder...
Unfortunately not everyone offers the manuals as a download. And trying to get information from a regular store is ehm... interesting but not very useful ::)

Come on, do you honoustly think I haven't read all that? :-\

But most of the time there's no way to find out if you can manually add a URL. Some use the Reciva server, some the Squeezebox server, but I want to do it on the radio itself and not have to rely on a third party service that may seize to exist. And if it is possible to add a URL manually, there is no AAC+V2 support. Or Wifi encryption is only WEP or even worse...

This really drives me mad!

Judging by your surname, I'm guessing you're dutch. Have a look at the Revo brand, they're made in the EU so you should be able to score one for a decent price. I'm testing one of their units now, for a magazine. It's called the AXiS and it's built around the new chipset that combines DAB/DAB+/FM and WiFi. Really interesting solution and it has a touchscreen on the front where you control everything.

I don't know. You didn't make it clear you had Googled already and I didn't renew my membership in the Psychic Friends Networ. ::)

Try the Internet Radio forum on this very site. You might get better results.

Thank you. But according to the manual it's only possible to choose a station from a server list. Could you please check if it is possible to manually add a URL (on the radio itself, not on some serverlist)? I like the Revo Rondo, but... same issue there.

Good idea, why didn't I think of that? :D

I'm pretty sure the way it works is you add those url's to your own personalized list, that your radio then can access. So I think, although I'm not 100% yet, that you set up an account using your computer and then add whatever url's you want to have on there, then you can access them via your radio. It would be really weird if you couldn't manually add url's, that feature has been around for 4-5 years at leats. I had that feature on my old Terratec wifi radio from 2005 or so.

But unfortunately that's exactly what is going on. :'(
Almost all wifi radios rely on a server based list of stations. If the station you look for isn't on their list or if the server is down (permanently) that's your bad luck.
To me feels like buying an FM/AM radio without a dial but with presets that are set by the manufacturer and cannot be changed.

I was just as surprised as you are now when I started my search...

Maybe you're right. It's probably because most rely on the same servers, I guess it's cheaper that way. They probably think you should contact Reciva and have your station added to their list if you want something that's not available. Reciva has been the king for years. But I agree, radios that don't have that feature are basically useless. Thanks for the tip.

Logitech handles it somewhat better with the possibility to add a personal favourites list on their server (mysqueezebox.com), but you are still forced to rely on a third party service, which I think is absurd. I'm really flabbergasted that this isn't mentioned in any test or review I read (and I read a lot). Most of the times the ease to find a listed station within a certain genre or country is praised, but nobody writes about stations that are NOT on the list...

A cluster of stations near here bought several of the Logitech radios to "off air monitor" their internet streams for PPM uptime.

My friend at the cluster thought they were so nifty, he bought one himself, it IS cool. It will stream mp3's from your home machine on your network, it definitely supports AAC+, and allows you to manually add streaming links.

And the sound was pretty good, too.

It's the squeezebox boom, it's a tabletop/alarm model with l/r speakers...lists for about $249. Near as I can tell, it's worth it!

But only through a Logitech site/server.

Personally, I'd suggest an iPod Touch. Wi Fi, AAC+ Support, and portable too...
That's not a bad idea...

Personally, I don't consider wifi only devices an option. I want FM too, and DAB/DAB+, to make it "future proof".

As far as manually adding stations: like I said, I agree. And the option to ask portals to add stations they don't yet have is not really an option at all since they probably won't add anything that's the slightest bit offensive, thus making themselves something of a censorship filter. A really easy way to handle this would be to make some sort of simple software that you can install on your computer and with which you can add url's from the web to your radio, using wireless communication. Just a blank space where you paste in the url and then an "add to favorites" button that will automatically add it to your radio's personal favorites presets. Wifi radio has come a long way but it's definitely not perfect yet.

Wonder what these manufacturers won't let you "host" your stream list on your own computer?

Are they selling ads on the page you have to go to in order to program in a new station?

That's just odd... and something I hadn't noticed myself!

It is a nifty device indeed, is cheap ánd has the possibility to add a URL (Hooray!!!).
Unfortunately Best Buy doesn't ship to Europe. :-[
BTW: I'm also wondering about quality of sound of the headphone-out?

Sounds great out of the headphone jack, I have it piped into my stereo.

Thank you! (I could have thought of that...)
What kind of AC/DC adapter goes with it? Does it have a 'regular' plug on the DC side?
I'll have to replace it for a 220V/50Hz model.
