Goodbye 101.7 The Fox (KXFX) hello Hot 101.7

That was a silly thing to do. Once you get to just over the hill and drop into Rohnert Park, most SF rock signal's disappear with marginal signal strength on what's left.

Today they flipped 101.7 The Fox to Hot 101.7. Sonoma County has another top 40 station and loses heritage rock station The Fox.

101.7 the Fox now a CHR station. I wonder if KUFX 102.1 has a good signal in Sonoma county. I think the reason 101.7 flippes is so they can avoid a suit from Entercom who owns KUFX on 102.1 and 98.5. I heard in the 102.1 promo that KUFX can reach Santa Rosa during Big Rick's show.

Sad news indeed. The Fox was, for 23 years, the heritage Rock station in Sonoma County. They featured strong local morning shows. The likes of White and Walker and later the Blazy show, are sadly, pretty much a thing of the past.

As of late however the ratings have waned. TBH, the format became difficult to sell, and I think that more than anything else lead to the demise. RIP, "The Rock Of Sonoma County".

Actually, KXFX-101.7 predates KUFX. KXFX has been around since 1988 while KUFX has been around since 1991, so I doubt a threat of a Entercom lawsuit was the reason.

Go's to show you people in the bay area don't like Active Rock :(

Rock is dead for the most part. It is being kept on life-support by nostalgists. Well, heck, it had a good run, not as long as hip-hop, but a pretty long run anyway.

Musicians I know who are hip and with it and together an hot and young and all that stuff are playing either hip-hop/jazz mash-ups or jazz/rock or country/jazz mash-ups. Some of these folks have been trying to come up with names for these genres given that the term "jazz" reminds them of Stan Kenton, not, say Tin Hat, the Decemberists, or Arcade Fire. "Indie rock" doesn't describe them because they're not really rock at all.

How does KRXQ & any other Active Rock Stations stay afloat?? I know there's people my age(36) or younger still listens to station's like that...

Most of the Kids these days listen to Hip-Hop/Rap still

They also listen to Alternative. When I was growing up in the 1970's, alot of my black & hispanic friends listened to soul/r&b as well as disco. Many of my female friends listened to Top 40 pop. But nearly ALL of my caucasian male friends listened to AOR, Rock & Roll! We lived off of FM Radio while the others were content with AM radio. I don't know if the demographics have changed much nowadays when listeners listen to Hip-Hop/Rap, Alternative, Active Rock or AC?

If the station has been around so long as a rock station, and it wasn't getting decent ratings as an Active Rock station, it could have moved a bit older. Most heritage rock stations in the suburbs (WBAB Long Island, WDHA North Jersey, KCAL Riverside, WIIL Rockford IL, etc.) play rock from the last four or five decades. They're not Classic Rock stations because they play some currents but they also try not to sound like a buzzsaw.

However, the owner of KXFX also owns Classic Rock KVRV, which is doing very well. So I suppose they thought aging the sound of KXFX was not an option. However, in Philadelphia, Greater Media owns both a Classic Rock station (WMGK) and a Heritage Rock station that plays a few currents but also many classics (WMMR) Both co-exist, both are always in the Top 10 in the ratings.

I got to listen to Hot 101.7 today, I had to null out KKIQ

Do they have any calls yet for there new station or just using KXFX for now??

I did the same here in Concord, and picked it up. Very interesting mix of music, I like it. OT but Mario, if you null KKIQ in Vallejo can you pick up 101.7 Kiss FM from Hamilton City/Chico?
