Goodbye 114 Tulsa Road Oak Ridge

The former home of WOKI FM- 100.3 and WORI AM 1550 met the wrecking ball earlier today. The once pink building has been reduced to rubble and a crew was scooping it all up when I passed by there around 4:30 today. The AM Tower on the creek bank is still standing. At least for now.

A lot of good radio came out of that place.

I had heard that the demolition was delayed do to a concern from the EPA. The building had exorbitant amounts of an unidentified gas trapped in the concrete blocks of structure. All concern was alleviated and demolition was authorized when the EPA learned the identity of WOKI's Chief Engineer. "Well that explains that" is what I heard was the final concluding remarks in the EPA's report.

Sad loss, Harry. I lived in Oak Ridge when Johnny signed that facility on back in the early 1970's. Buster Sutton kept that Collins gear purring like a kitten during those fine years. Miss the place and loved Oak Ridge growing up. Loved Johnny and still do. An inspiration to me through the years. I am in shock though I knew this was happening.

Hello, Babys!
The Bopper is back in town.

I understand Johnny sold that real estate a few years ago to a motel operator. Seems there are not enough beds in the Atomic City for all those rowers who come to practice on Melton Hill Lake.

Anyone know if the tower will remain?

Nosey minds want to know!

BB

About the tower, we are talking about the short am tower that 1550 and later 1290 used that is located on the property behind the building. Not the 100.3 tower located on the "flag pole" up in Campbell County.

Any word on that infamous spiral staircase? They should cut it up and give a piece to everyone who dared travel up and down that rickety old thing. :). Lots of stories in that building - told and untold.

About the tower, The Hotel operator bought the land between the creek and Tulsa Road. The land and the tower on the other side of the creek is still johnny's I understand. I've come to know the Hotel's owner and he says that Johnny wanted to keep the tower standing so who knows what the plan might be for that.
