Goodbye 2007

The year we lost a Seattle legend: Madman Moskowitz. We miss you, Madman. Wish my children would've had the pleasure I remember of Sunday nights (and later Saturday nights) chuckling along with the Madman and his "flat friends". "Godzilla tasted Moskowitz... and he spit him out!" One of a kind and sorely missed.

The year we also lost Larry Nelson. I was unfamiliar with his work but familiar with his reputation. Others have eloquently commented on his legacy.

Respect also to Mike Webb and his tragic end.

What other passings have I inadvertently overlooked? Other meaningful 2007 Seattle Radio items that should be noted? Here's to a 2008 of health, joy and success.

Mike Webb Remembered

The Murder of Mike Webb: The Most TRAGIC Seattle Radio Story of 2007:

It just sickened me to find out how he died last year.

There's some people who didn't like Mike Webb for one reason or the other (be it his politics, his feistiness, junk food cravings or whatever), but he took one hell of a fall from being a popular talk show host one year to being totally ostracized from the only career he had ever known in his life (he had been working in radio since he was a teenager) and having to use a Quest EBT card the next.

I think he deserved a little more credit than what he got from a smug and often heartless industry. After all, he was popular with a lot of Seattle radio listeners and he had a solid resume to prove it. I'd like to think if Limbaugh, Liddy and Imus all got second chances, that he was just as worthy of one himself and that he would reappear on the radio soon, maybe on KPTK or even at least KKNW (they REALLY could have used him.) The industry fell all over themselves to find some way to excuse Limbaugh, Liddy and Imus for THEIR transgressions, but somehow, NEVER Mike Webb. And that kind of double standard is pathetic.

Yes, the attempted insurance fraud was bad, but so is doctor shopping (Limbaugh), conspiracy, burglary and illegal wiretapping (Liddy.) And those people got off with a slap on the wrist, a wag of the finger and a career as if nothing even happened. Mike lost everything.

Show me the justice in THAT.

I have no inside knowledge of the matter. But if I were Mr Webb's employer, and he was out driving around when he was supposed to be on the air, leaving his engineer scrambling to find something to put on the air for two hours when he never came back, I would not give him a second chance, either. And I don't think Limbaugh, Imus, et al would get second chances for that, either.

BW: Agree it was the most eye-opening radio story of 2007 ... and I too often thought the ideal marriage would have been KPTK + Mike Webb as their anchor local personality. Given some time, it could have probably happened.

As far as driving around while on the air ... the master of that skill in my opinion is STILL Humble Harve. He taped out ... had engineers run his "show" on KHJ while he drove home to do some sleuthing and proved his hunch that wife was having an affair was pretty much on-the-mark. Out came the gun ..... and he did time.
