Goodbye, Bwana

It's been a tough year for losing our radio friends. Don Rose in April, Jerry Kay last month, Michael Spears (RKO PD) earlier this week; and today we learn that Bwana Johnny/Father Duffy (aka Richard Johnson) passed peacefully at his rest home on Mercer Island.

What a nice man -- but in recent months we saw him radiate with smiles when friends stopped by to let him know he's still in our hearts and memories. We should all be so lucky to have folks show us, in person, that they care in our last few weeks!

I only wish I had a chance to know him, but he was still instrumental in my decision to get into radio in the first place. I never knew him from his days in Seattle or Portland, but from a lesser-known market of his incredible career, Eugene OR.

Like BLUE, I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

He was also a good friend of Imus and many other national radio hosts...

I remember Charlie Brown playing a few airchecks of "Father Duffy" during the KJR 70's Reunion Week back in '95. Funny guy.<P ID="signature">______________

Imus paid a tribute to him this morning. Imus mentioned knowing him well when Bwana Johnny worked on a country station in San Francisco (a country station in San Francisco?!?), and he was Cowboy Johnny at the time. Two things he mentioned were his girth, which he could never manage, and the day he wore a mink coat and walked into his office in New York. The temperature was more than three digits that day.
