Goodbye Conroe, Hello Katy... (re: KYOK)

Another one trying to abandon Conroe, to head to the greener pastures of Katy. First 880, now 1140. Construction permit granted April 16th to move KYOK from Conroe to Katy with 3 directional patterns. The move includes a decrease of power from 5,000 watts to 800 daytime and gives nighttime authorization to the station for the first time at a whopping 9 watts. That's not a typo folks. An amazing 9 watts. From its proposed tower site, the nighttime signal won't even reach Katy.

See here: http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KYOK&service=AM&status=C&hours=N

It shoots the full signal E & SE towards Houston which, in the daytime, should give KYOK a decent signal over metro Houston, and protects 1st adjacent WTAW-College Station @ 1150. Let's see if this one flies any further than KJOJ's attempt did.

9 watts that sucks crappy radio that will give 1 to 3 mile range with decent antenna height and 5 to 10 with good car radio

Holy cow, I'm getting old. KYOK has to protect 1st adjacent KZNE-College Station @ 1150 to the north, not WTAW.

No, you're not...it's just that old habits are hard to break! After all, the WTAW call letters were used on 1150 until 13 years ago this month.

Yes they are! Wow, it's been 13 years already?? What happened to WTAW having to shut down 1150 or sell the license after they moved to 1620? That was supposed to be in the first 5 years of 1620's existence, but never happened. 1150 & 1620 are still co-owned.

That might be a topic for another thread, like on the FCC Policy Board. The FCC continues to look the other way and has granted many requests for exceptions to the rule. Elsewhere in Texas, for example, Fort Worth's KHVN 970 and X-bander KKGM 1630 are still owned by Mortenson Broadcasting; same thing with Entravision's KHRO 1150 and KSVE 1650 in El Paso.
