Goodbye "CW-11" & Hello to WPIX w/ Circle 11 Logo!!

Coming in December WPIX is going to drop the CW-11 name and bring back the WPIX branding....They will also have a new Circle 11 logo....The morning news will now be the "PIX Morning News & evening news will be the "PIX News @ 10"....Glad to see they are putting the WPIX calls back into good use....Even though the CW branding is going to be dropped the CW programming will stay on the channel.

That's pretty awesome! Glad to see a little bit of the old WPIX coming back. Not to mention that the CW logo was just plain butt-ugly!

I agree. Very good thing. It's a little different of a logo than they've used previously, but still reminiscent of the classic logos. I'd prefer a straight copy (which would also be cheaper) but this is fine.

Emphasizing the localism of a station is also an excellent idea. It makes you different from any other station in the country instead of being a cookie cutter. How many CBS2's do you think there are, for example?

Good job Tribune.

The new logo is actually a merging of two previous logos: the slanted-top ones from the "WB-11" logo merged in with the classic "circle 11" logo from the 80's. I would have opted for a rebirth of the "11 Alive" campaign, but that's just me...

Not surprising that the scoop on this is coming from the Daily News, whose HQ is in the same building as that of 'PIX (the calls were named after "New York's Picture Newspaper".) I have to walk by the building and see if they've started working on taking down the golden "CW" logo branding on 220 E. 42nd St...

The News moved out of 220E42 more than a decade ago. It's now in that big hulking concrete building at 450 E. 33rd Street, near the Lincoln Tunnel. That building, ironically, also houses WNET/WLIW and the Associated Press.

Funny, I just thought the same thing, with the cheesey number "11" sticking out of the letters "A" and "l" of "Alive." I still remember the old jingle promoting baseball games "When the Yanks are at bat, Yanks are at bat..."

All we need now is for them to plug in the old Mattel Intellivision and resurrect the "TV Pix" call-in game show, where lucky kids who sent in their postcards were chosen to fire the guns/throw the football/play tic-tac-toe in between weekday afternoon cartoons... by yelling "PIX! PIX! PIX!" :D

That's news to me (pun intended)... thanks for clearing that up, Scott!

Idiot: I'm sure there's old "11 Alive" commercials and spots all over the YouTubes.

Good job Tribune.

You're totally right. We've had over a decade of homogenization in radio and tv and look at what happened. I'm glad Tribune figured out the importance of being unique and sticking with a tradition that works. Plus, I don't like anything about the CW or its akward name and logo.

By the way, up the road in Waterbury, CT Tribune turned the CW20 (WTXX-TV) into "TXX" a few months ago. Can't wait to see the new "PIX" in December. Way to go Tribune, bringing us back to the good old days!

This pleases me greatly! I too thought that the "11 Alive!" positioner was their very best, but the minimalist 11 in a circle is great. No need to make new graphics, just use the old one. Tribune made a friend here when they reintroduced the digitally remastered 'Yule Log', which they also run on sister station WPHL 17 Philadelphia. Speaking of cool old graphics, 'PHL used to have the number 17 inside an octagon!

Dang, this is bringing back memories of UHF converters and rabbit ears with tinfoil on them! ;)

To a lesser extent, there's a hint of the "CW11" logo as well; the "W" in "WPIX" curves in the same style as the "W" in the CW Network logo.

I've always loved watching Channel 11, WPIX. I especially enjoyed the original "11 Alive" moniker and the colorful classic 11 Alive logo and the catchy "eleven.... eleven alive!!!!" jingles, circa 1976. It's good to see that the folks at WPIX are going back to their roots, somewhat. No more of this CW11 stuff. (Yeccccch!). The good thing is that once digital arrives in February, WPIX will STILL be on its' namesake Channel 11, albeit digital. Ah, what I could do for the "The Odd Couple" at 11, the "Honeymooners" at 11:30, followed by "The Twilight Zone" at midnight. That was one super schedule. I remember it well.

I remember the late evening schedule from the mid 80's. I forget if Odd Couple was still on at 11 at the time, but The Honeymooners was definitely at 11:30 (like it was for probably decades) followed by the original Star Trek at midnight.

There was one time when 11 replaced Trek with Space:1999 for a few weeks and ran promos claiming that "the Starship Enterprise is in for a tune up." Very bizarre, but I remember it well 20+ years later.

They now just need to cut down on the Maury, Jerry Springer and other crap in the daytime, and run something else, that's likely cheesy, but that isn't so crappy that'll do, like how they did in the early 90's :)

I think Odd Couple, Honeymooners and Jeffersons still run on WPIX, though after 1 am.

WPIX still airs The Odd Couple and The Jefffersons. At 2AM & 230AM respectively. Although the CW11 logo is still on their site, their website now forwards to WPIX.COM They also expanded their Morning News to 430AM, something their sister station FOX 61 in Hartford did back in August. It appears they don't air The Honeymooners anymore, but if you have satellite you can catch that on WPIX's cable sister station WGN AMERICA Sunday Nights at 9PM.

As of last night's 10pm newscast, WPIX is now referring to themselves as 'PIX News at 10' and the new logos are displaying on screen and on their reporters' microphones.

Good riddance to a bad name. In fact, I'd love to see EVERY station stop branding themselves with their network identity. It's especially ridiculous in New York where three of the station have their network names in their call letters already.

Network branding for local stations is one of the worst things Fox ever inflicted upon the world.

Well, NBC 4 has gone by the wayside, it's 4 New York now, correct?
