Goodbye Hot 106

At one time, Brown University owned a commercial FM outlet, 95.5 WBRU. It was an Alternative Rock station. I suppose there may be an audience for this format. LA has two, San Diego has two.

Is Providence Southern California?

I'll give you a hint: No, it is not.

At one time, Brown University owned a commercial FM outlet, 95.5 WBRU. It was an Alternative Rock station. I suppose there may be an audience for this format. LA has two, San Diego has two. There are successful Alternative stations in a number of markets.

At one time, Providence had WBRU and Boston had two Alternative stations. Now WBRU is K-Love WLVO. And Boston lost both Alternative stations.

WBRU was a fantastic station, it was my go-to for my summer trips to RI. There's basically nothing on the radio driving from all the way from NYC to Boston anymore. So many stations playing the same boring things including classic rock already, which now seems like it will be duplicated by 106.

Hmmm... classic rock. The market already has HJY as well as rimshot coverage from WZLX. I would have thought they'd put WPRO on 106.3 to help fill in coverage gaps from 99.7. 106.3 would definitely fill in north of Providence, the Attleboros, Blackstone Valley, and the Woonsocket area, which is home to translators on 99.5 and 99.9, essentially wiping out whatever signal 99.7 has left at that point.

I would have thought they'd put WPRO on 106.3 to help fill in coverage gaps from 99.7.

WPRO doesn't need the help. They're doing just fine with their existing coverage. Cumulus has the experience of putting an AM on an FM signal. They just did it in Dallas with WBAP. The result was actually a big drop in ratings, as well as the loss of revenue from what the FM signal made before the flip.

Classic Rock... Seems like another brilliant Cumulus move.
Safe move, in that advertisers support it even on second stations in a market. Most musical formats target women, and since active rock and alt listeners are saddled by Madison Avenue with the stereotype of "cynical slacker in mom's basement with a job at McDonald's," classic rock is the best way to reach men who don't like country (which skews country, too, but not as heavily as CHR and AC) or sports while also billing well.

Just noticed a brainfart in my last entry, too late to correct. Country radio, of course, skews female. Although I suppose some critics of today's country music might say that a country station that plays "real" country music skews country.

Yes, a marginal metro signal with the same format as a powerhouse - advertisers will flock there. How about give them something they don't have?

Does WJMN (“Jamn’ 94.5”) still have a presence in Providence? Their signal does come in good around Southern New England.

It appears that 106.3 is now 106.3 The Wolf, playing classic rock. Still accessed through Hot 106's old URL (for now.) And if you're wondering, 1063thewolf.com takes you to a country station in Enid, Oklahoma.

And, upon further examination, their playlist is a duplicate of 102.3 The Wolf (WMOS/Stonington). Perhaps they plan to "simulcast" or at least have the same jocks track on both stations?
