Goodbye Kicks 101.5 AND Eagle 106.7?

Some blurb on radioandrecords.com was saying that Entercom was looking to gobble up all the ABC stations. If that happens, there's a slight possibility that Kicks and Eagle could both bite the dust despite ratings. One thing I considered in jumping to this hypothesis goes back to January 24, 2001. Entercom acquired Froggy 94 out in Memphis before then and it got the axe on the aforementioned date. One of the reasons being tossed around for this format flip is that Entercom just doesn't do country. Could spell trouble for the pair not only here, but in Dallas as well.

Just something I thought about.

OBVIOUSLY you didnt think about it much! Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Give away the market you have cornered. Sheesh.

Exactly. ABC owns the country market in Atlanta. My bet is Entercom will LEARN how to "do" country, if they took over the ABC stations.

OK, here is the deal: If a station makes money...a company...whether its Entercom, Viacom or "bob's radio company" will "learn" to do country. Its money, ratings are second....bad bet. Shareholders are the real power.

Yes, Shareholders are the real power, but profits direct what they do. You can bring in high revenues and little profit. That's when the changes start. Kicks and Eagle appear to have both high revenue and high profit though. If this is a long term investment, I don't think you'll see many changes. They will contribute greatly to overall company profits and may perform better with little to no changes under different ownership. Everyone has ideas for cuts to squeeze a few more dollars out, but Kicks and Eagle are excellent properties in an excellent market.
______________

Entercom just doesn't do country

Really? Take a look at KWJJ The Wolf in Portland.
Even if Entercom DIDN'T have any country stations...
that statement is beyond belief. Do you even OWN a radio?

but wait...there's more!

How about WDAF in Kansas City? That's at least two...It seems to me like Entercom is a company that doesn't mess with success too much when they take over a station.

WBEE in Rochester comes to mind as an Entercom country station as well, and it's very successful. They also went as far as to try to launch a country station in Wichita, though it was a disaster and failed quickly. Entercom is about money more than anything else. They killed Froggy 94 in Memphis because it wasn't doing well, not because they don't do country.

I am originally from Memphis and I thought it was a huge mistake at that time for Entercom to eliminate Froggy 94. I think it would be a terrible mistake for Entercom to do the same here with Kicks and Eagle. 94.1 the Buzz in Memphis is falling in ratings these days and the market could desparately use another country station. The only one they have "Kix 106" is doing very well and could use some competition.

Ignore Cowboy. He's a child who has been posting on this board for nearly 4 years, but for some reason, just hasn't learned much from those around him. The first two years of his posts were filled with silly hate-spewing posts about anything that was not Star 94 (i distinctly remember lots of posts about "P.U. 100" etc.) his email address begins with Star94Rox, for God's sakes. Enough said.

Educate yourself, son! Your homework is to write a 1000-word essay on why major corporations choose specific formats. (Hint: it's not because they "do" or "don't do" Country...use words like "demographic", "hole in the market", and "sellability")

Makes about as much sense as me buying the Mars Candy Company and shutting down the M&M's division because I don't do chocolate....

Doesn't sound like Cowboy is much of a business major. We own the market so let's scrap it ato go after soeone else's market. Maybe they will dump Eagle for alternative music. I hear there are a lot of ratings to be had in the market.
