goodbye morning show

Well 990 is running Fox Sports this morning. I knew that something was up when I heard Jerry Overton doing traffic over on KRLD this weekend. So what's next for 990? Will 700 ever see the light of day, or will 990 simply go to an all fox station?

Don't get your hopes up. They're out of the office and there was no best of preped in time.

Just keep cleaning your guns, I'll tell when to aim, and Bingo will tell you when and what to shoot.

Doc Bryce did I hear you doing traffic on WBAP with Hal Jay??? I hope you've landed on your feet after the 990 deal....

Re: goodbye morning show and CB question

That's a BIG 10-4 there good buddy! I was filling in for Alan on over nights while he took a well deserved week vacation.

Traffic Pulse is a great place to work for. The only log to keep up with over there is the spot log. No TX logs or EAS to run. Everbody knows everbody and willing to cover for on another when needed. As long as you're there when they que you, do what they want, you can do no evil.

What's more Ironic, I looked at my pay stub the other day and realized that I make more money doing traffic part-time than I did doing Production full-time. That was a wake up call!

Thanks for the well wishes, I'm gone!

Speaking of CB talk, can anyone answer me this:

I was raised in a house with a CB in every car, a base unit in the house, and my step-father I found out after he died carried a license back in the day.

What I also found in his collection os CB's was a badge that says on the front "HIGHWAY RADIO PATROL" around the Texas State Seal. Then on the bottom of the badge is says "ASIP"

I searched the internet for something, but the clostest thing I can find is radio patrol for the DPS. Any Ideas?

Re: CB question and pic

I just put a pic of the badge up on my site to help get a better idea of what this could be.

If you're on dial up sorry.
The Camera that was used is a professional digital camera and I don't have a pic editor on this machine to reduce it.

Re: CB question and pic

Hi Doc,

It stands for: Airspace Flight Inspection Pilot

Yes, MY "sources" say ASIP stands for Airspace Flight Inspection Pilot. Maybe there are other acronyms for it, but that was the closest I got.

Actually another source claims it's: "Advanced System Improvement Program"

ASIP is known to stand for:
Advanced Systems Improvement Program

but on CB radio, that is an oxymoron...

Re: CB question and pic

That doesn't make any sence. What would a Highway Radio Patrol have to do with flight? Please explain!

Re: CB question and pic

Ok, next question:

What would someone do with a badge like this and what was it purpose if any?

I remember the CB rage, but I never knew of a time (in my life time) where you were required to be licensed. This is where I'm trying to fit the pieces that I found in my step-fathers box.

I will tell you once upon a time, Bingo and I placed a whip in the trunk of my car and would key up on Channel 10 in Arlington to mess with the kids over at the UTA parking lot. We'd get them mad at us to want to fight just to watch them drive around in circles in rage looking for a car with a whip. They would tell us they can tell how close we were based on their TX/RX meter. Funny thing was so could we! That's how we stayed close enough to watch but not get caught.

Good times, good times ROFL!

any how, still trying to figure out the story behind this badge if any.

Re: CB question and pic

I couldn't decode ASIP. I did find that the ones given by Radi0chik and CW are valid even if they're not necessarily the one you're looking for.

As a consolation prize, here's a smaller version of your picture if you'd like it: http://www.miduppertexas.com/images/doc/badge.jpg My lights dimmed when I loaded your version. :)

Any idea how old the badge would likely be? I know from the late 30s into the 60s Radio Patrol was a separate police division in many departments. It's possible this was from a branch of the state Highway Patrol. If you're ever in Austin, maybe someone at the DPS' Historical Museum and Research Center could help. (http://texasdpsmuseum.com/)

The FCC did require a license for the operation of CBs at one time. My understanding is that the requirement dropped when they could no longer handle the volume of requests.

Yeah, you and Bingo are some funny peoples.

Ego thing I bet......why would anyone build a 1000watt amplifier to talk 4 miles down the road?? ;)

CBs had to be licensed from the start of Class D (27MHz) in the 1950s when the 11mtr ham band (which was shared with medical diathermy stuff...EEEWWW nasty sounding on a rcvr!) was turned over to the Citizens Band svc (which at the time had Class A and B CB at 460Mhz but radios at UHF were not cheap and gave poor range with tubes, etc!)..Licenses were 3 letters and 4 numbers...such as KAB1615 or KDO1234....the license requirement went away in the 80s when the FCC threw in the towel after the trucker explosion and noone was getting a license (which was only $20 and a form filled out)...gotta love this LAW abiding country (As Bush calls us) right???

Hmmm tacky actually (nothing personal but...)..On ham bands (back in the good old days...not NOW in a lot of cases due to the CB mentality taking over the ham bands), that would get you thrown off the band and banished! Interferring on purpose is not a nice thing...and is usually done by folks with nothing better or constructive to do....those that do that are called LIDS...
which is not a compliment.

So am I...probably some CB club thing.....(doubt if it is official or tied with the state in anyway other than it has the state name, etc on the badge...)

Re: CB question and pic

How about this one? for ASIP

Action-Specific Implementation Plan

I remember in the 70's seeing pictures of the DPS giving certificates to local CB'rs for helping in passing information when the roads iced over or other major events on the Highway that the public needed to be informed about.

Long before you could call an 800 number on your cell phone to find out why traffic had stopped.

Re: Hey Doc this might help

Back in the 60's The DPS actually used planes to help the local sheriff's patrol the roads before the interstate highways really took shape. Many were still being built, not just repaired like today. The planes were a tanish yellow with either the owrds "Border"or 'CP"on the underside of the wing. Yes they were used for the border patrol as well, but mainly to monitor state hiways and US Highways Not "Interstate highways' unless the bad guys were fleeing rustlin cattle:)Hope that help. Good luck on Kansas and it was great chatting with you on the phone.

I was driving into work to do our morning show up here in Oklahoma and heard that and thought about it for a minute... and I was like, "Damn.. that's our boy from Mainstreet Radio..." You sounded good.... I wouldn't mind being on that signal once or twice. You can hear it on the moon....

Re: goodbye morning show and CB question

Thanks for the compliment! Many seem to be impressed with my delivery. Puts me more at ease! I was scared to death I was going to bottom out on the air. I'm so used to doing everything produced, if you screw it up, you can always go back and fix it lol.

One of the great things about WBAP is they're 50kW non-directional. At night they can roughly clear 38 states Vs. 100Kw FM station that can get up to the TX/OK state line. Just check out WLS on 890, they're in Chicago and you can still get them here. Not clear, but you can still get it in! WHO is another great example when 1040 here locally powers down for the night. That's how I used to catch Michael Reagan.

Well, it may be a traffic report. 30 seconds of me talking fast to cram info and a spot in one sitting. At least I'm still in the game! My hand in this round of Poker may not be strong enough for a flush, but at least I got a decent hand to keep me at the table. Besides, you never know who's listening out there. Best thing to do is deliver your best every time, even if it is between midnight to 6am. You never know when you may get a another chance to impress that potential employer.

Stranger things have happened in the past :-D

Re: CB question and pic

Thanks for the smaller pic. That'll wil help save on my bandwirdth ;)

I have no idea how old the badge is. Something that I just came across. I've asked around and not many have been able to help me with an answer. I figured somebody who's been around radio or a fan of radio long enough would hold the five million dollar answer.

Appreciate the link to the DPS Historical Museum. I'll have to look in to that. What would be really sweet if it was any value! Then I'd have a real story to talk about behind the badge. For now it just hangs in a printers tray turned sideways with my 3rd phone license in it, and some other radio nick nacks. When People spot it, they ask what it's about and all I can do for now is shrug my shoulders cause there's no story to tell.

Either way, wether it has any vaule or not. It's worth hanging on to just cause there's nothing like it out there.

Re: CB question and pic

Hey, Doc, here's a handy free tool for emailing nutty radio pictures. It's Image Resizer, a free program that's part of the PowerToys for Windows XP. Here's the location:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

The program's in the column on the right.

You can resize a photo by right-clicking on its icon and choosing Resize Pictures. There are four sizes, the medium or small size are best. The program copies your photo to its new size while keeping the original.

Now, send us some other nutty or arcane radio photos, please.
