Goodbye, Neighbors. (1936-2008)

Longtime Houston Anchor Ron Stone-A fixture on KHOU & KPRC-TV, passed away today. He died of Prostate Cancer. After He retired, Stone formed his own company, StoneFilms of Texas-with his sons Bill & Ron, Jr. He was a pitchman for Olshan Lumber Company. He was also survived by his wife, Patsy and 2 daughters. Stone was also a Co-Anchor of The Scene at 5 with longtime neighbor & weatherman Doug Johnson. Both of whom had great chemistry together.

Funeral Arrangements are pending at this very moment.

If it's possible to sum someone up in one word, I'll go out on a limb and say the word "genuine" describes Ron Stone perfectly. Off camera and away from work he was the same friendly, outgoing, self-effacing, honest, straightforward, and approachable person you saw on TV. He respected the viewers' intelligence and never talked down to us.

Not many people in TV you can say that about anymore.

Tomorrow, Channel 2 (KPRC) plans to air an Hour-long tribute to Ron Stone. Stone was the heart of Channel 2. Bill Balleza will be hosting this special.

Ron & Doug have been close friends & neighbors through thick & thin. They live out in the same neighborhood, They tell stories and just love to talk about everything. Ron has been a longtime history buff. Ron hosted "The Eyes of Texas" and Doug used to be a Meteorologist at Channel 2. Today, Doug Johnson runs KNWS Channel 51 right here in Houston.

Since Ron & Doug left Channel 2, Ownership changed hands. All of the sudden, it went from The 3rd-Ranked Station to Last-place. Channels 13 & 11 are still the most powerful television stations here, and Channel 2 is right behind Chs. 26 & 39, and The Univision station (45) is now in 5th place. Channel 2 is still the same. It went from locally owned to a company that's cheaply owned. (Post-Newsweek).

Ron Stone will be sorely missed in Houston's TV Land.

That's a different Doug Johnson.

Bad Mistake. What's Doug Johnson been up to since he retired from Channel 2 (KPRC)? Still married to Lori?

I guess that Ron Stone would probably rank
second to Ray Miller as a Houston institution.
Since I lived in Dallas, not Houston, I didn't
get to see his work but when you last as long
as he did, he must have been good.

The were both great ones, 2 of many we've had that stayed put instead of seeking more fame and fortune with the nets. I guess since Miller ran the news shop he could be said to have been a bigger influence in that regard but Stone became known for more than news, particularly through hosting the MDA Telethon. I think Jack Harris made the point in his book on Channel 2 that Stone supplanted Dick Gottlieb as 'Mr. Television' in Houston.

It's amazing how many people today were completely unaware of him, however. 15 years (since he retired) is an eternity in Houston.

When he said 'Goodnight, neighbor,' you really believed he was talking to you as a neighbor.

I'm glad I got to benefit from the talents of both of them.
