Goodbye Pixy 103, hello WEEI?

PIXY is history. Frank blew its own property out of the water!! LOL

weei sports talk on the cape will be a big success. celtics, patriots, sox broadcasts too? no brainer. it'll pull in better ratings than pixy in the first book.

which aint sayin much when you look at pixy's declining numbers over the past several books.

Now XTK can put Howie on in the morning and dump their local show.

SIN-dicated programming is alive and well on the Cape!

Goodbye Variety Radio . Hello same Sh/t on all radio signals .

Instead of dumping PIXY, couldn't they just put WEEI on either 101.1 or 93.5? At least that way, they could test the waters first ...

How about going to WEEI.com and listen WEEI that way . Why put WEEI on alot of signals ? I like WEEI , but not on alot of signals in New England (R.I.P. Veriety Radio ).

Fybush confirms Pixy 103 will go to the WEEI simulcast along with 5 other stations (Upper Valley VT/NH,
Laconia NH, Portland ME)

Ok, so the question then is if Pixy will be put on one or both of the FRANK-FM simulcasts. Or will it be dumped after a 20 year run? I had my problems with PIXY, but it'd still be sad to see the station go altogether.

I think everytime I hear PIXY -- it's just sound. No passion, nothing awful, nothing good, just boring sound. It needed to be fixed years ago and for the most part it still sounds exactly the same now, even the playlist.

But is the answer a new format or a new direction (and PD)?

For Labor Day weekend, Pixy is promising to play it's "massive classic library from A to Z - every song in our library from A to Z."

If you could go back in time 2 or 3 years and tune in, you wouldn't hear anything from Clapton, Joe Walsh, Mountain, Neil Young, Creedence. If you heard classic rock on Pixy during that time, you'd most likely hear something from Zeppelin, Van Halen, AC/DC, Boston, The Doors, Black Sabbath, or Aerosmith. Their classic selection at that point was very limited, and those tunes were often repeated so I can see why they expanded the classic library...that was a smart move IMHO.

However, I think they went about it the wrong way. I'm no radio genius, I'm just using some logic here and this is what I would have done.

Pixy was never heavy on Classic Rock at least not when I had the most exposure to it as a listener. Having said that, I would have kept it that way. I would have expanded the late 60's/70's classic rock selection without increasing the amount of those tunes played throughout the day. There'd be a lot less repetition going on. The recurrents and new rock should have been expanded as well, even as far back as 2 or 3 years ago. You hear tunes on BCN, BRU and other active rock stations that you just don't hear on Pixy. Depending upon where you are on Cape Cod, it is hard to tune in to BCN or BRU anyway. The upper cape would be the easiest place to get those stations with a decent signal. What about the listeners on the lower end of the cape between Dennis and Chatham and on up to P-Town? People out in those areas would have a hard time tuning into BCN or BRU...their only other option is Pixy. Who ever made the decision to put more emphasis on Classic rock made the mistake of giving the listener something they could hear on another station instead of doing the exact opposite. Had the opposite action been taken, I think things would be a lot different right about now.

Liam mentioned something about a local morning show...I think it could work. I doubt it could do any worse than Howard's first replacement, Rover's Morning Glory.

actually, the interesting thing as you drive up the arm of the cape is that sometimes stations from both boston and providence come in better than those out of hyannis/falmouth! But, you are right about the lack of stations playing new rock on the cape - pixy 103 is/was the only game in town. If it were up to me, since we're in the year 2007, I would have expanded the alternative golds from the '90s and early '00s. I also would have slightly expanded their new rock - but wouldn't have overdone it, keeping in mind that it is cape cod. And I still would have kept the older stuff from the '70s and '80s in there - but I would have limited and tweaked it (where's the Bowie, Stooges, and Elvis Costello?).
Essentially, I would have changed PIXY from active rock to alternative classic.
Now, I'm still wondering if PIXY is going to move to another Nassau frequency - we'll see after this weekend. I hope it does.

that's good thinking, Yo. I'd do the same. There isnt a rock and roll soul on the cape who doesnt recognize an alternative gold..........

....However, the PD there has zero experience in the alternative world, and yeah I know, you can read any trade and program the right golds, but PIXY has always been an active/metal station, still playing unfamiliar currents (again, lack of PD experience), old tired 80's big hair, and burnt out classic rock. just grab a look at the PDs profile on the website and you pretty much get the picture.......and look, I'm not bashing the PD, just stating fact. She's a long-time employee (what, fifteen, twenty years?) and midday show host in a small market, but that doesnt mean she's qualified to program a radio station.

....that said, the latest word on the street is that the PIXY frequency will use WEEI sports as the morning show, and then jump back to classic rock heavy music at 10 or 11. They're also said to be broadcasting local (what?!!) sports when possible and sprinkling other EEI programming to fill holes (weekends, late nights, etc).........IMHO, that's pretty stupid. Either commit to the sports talk format, or dont. Talk about advertising suicide......I'm sure there'll be advertisers who want to ht that morning show, but then what? You think they want to run spots during a music format that has been tanking the last four books?

From a listeners perspective, I'd have to believe that if you tune in to hear sports talk in the morning, you're gonna leave at 10 to continue to listen on the AM side of the dial. If you dont tune in because its talk and not music, are you gonna leave the classic rock station (WKPE) you've been listening to all morning just because PIXY is back on the air with music? And when PIXY starts talking again later in the day/evening...........good god, what a headache.....If I'm a listener for music, I'm picking WKPE and staying put.........

MoLarry was right-on about Pixy. All of it. Howard Stern's ratings covered-up a lot of weaknesses on that station and the PD didn't know how to step-up and perform when the station needed her most. No direction and no leadership. It's been that way for years except now there's no more Howard to carry the station.

No matter what you think of the current PD, my opinion is that if WPXC is going to air any of the WEEI-broadcast, they'd better do the whole thing or none at all.

Rock listeners won't hang around for way-too-inside sports talk and many of the sports listeners won't hang around for the music format.

Do one thing and do it well. I know PXC's numbers have been sliding, but to combo the programming will absolutely sink the signal.

I completely agree. If this does happen, though, it'll be a shame. Instead of making programming changes to see if they can increase PIXY's ratings, it appears as if they are doing something far too drastic.
