Goodbye to "bonus coverage"

According to Northwest Broadcasters -

02/26/14 - The FCC has granted a construction permit to Voice of Vashon for a new low power FM station at Vashon. It will operate with an ERP of 6.6 watts at 112.3 meters HAAT at 101.9 MHz at 47° 26' 6.93" 122° 27' 54.80". FCC data Also granted a CP is The Tulalip Tribes of Washington for a new low power FM at Tulalip. It will operate with an ERP of 5.4 watts at 125.7 meters HAAT at 96.9 MHz

That does not bode well for KINK's extensive coverage throughout the southern Puget Sound. I can usually hear KINK fairly well on my car radio, but I imagine those days will be over when they crank this thing up.

Even worse, there is going to be a station on 96.9 north of Everett. Takeover of CKLG territory (fringe range, at-least)!

Living in Gig Harbor, I don't think 6 watts is going to have that big of an impact on KINK. It may upset listeners of KINK living on Vashon Island, but that's about it. As for the 96.9, I'm not sure about that one, although if they're going to do that, it might also make sense to put a low power station on any of the Seattle frequencies in South Bend or Raymond. Well, except for 96.5 and 94.9, since there are already stations there.

You are probably right, the new station probably won't have THAT big of an effect on the KINK signal. The KHTP repeater is 250 watts, and is barely audible over the 103.3 signal from Portland from my precise location.

I'm relatively certain that nobody living in the Everett/Marysville vicinity will miss listening to CKLG. There is not much left of the Mount Seymour radio stations left for casual listening after you hit Everett (thanks to Bongwater and Crainbebo for the info on the Seymour range a while ago). Still, the new station is encroaching on CKLG footprint. I think they could have picked a better frequency.

I could see radio stations existing on the same Seattle frequency in a city like Long Beach, or Ocean City. A better example would be stations utilizing the same frequencies in Grays Harbour. Most of the Seattle stations are degraded to a signal that is really not listenable unless you are a radio enthusiast (like a Radio Discussions member) ;) They are already doing it with KGHO moving to 99.9 (despite KISW still having life in it).

96.9 CKLG is really good on Marysville hills, with a very little bit of KGY. This new 96.9 N of Everett will kill CKLG just 90 miles away or less. Thank GOD I don't live here anymore. By 2020, there will probably be 10 LPFMs on 101.9 alone in Seattle-Tacoma. Say goodbye to KINK.

We're loosing our ability to listen to distant stations because a minute group of individuals want to "play" radio. I really do not know who they think will be listening to these stations. I can tell you right now that I certainly have no interest. I would rather see what happens if a station like KHHO went back to being "KTAC" and adopted a "full service" format.
