Goodbye to Sharona's boyfriend

Doug Fieger of The Knack has died.

I remember how annoying "My Sharona" was during my first semester in college. It was everywhere! At the same time, I was aware that this song marked a turning point in musical history.

About a decade later, I happened to be listening to one of the countdown shows and there was this new band Nirvana. The DJ was comparing the to The Knack, and I have to admit that even that first time I heard it, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" did sound different from what came before it. That DJ was right, as it turned out, because Nirvana introduced yet another new era in music.

"My Sharona" is one of those songs I can remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it. I was swimming at a YMCA summer camp in 1979. I even remember the radio station that was playing it. It jumped out at me and I loved it from the second I heard it. Like many songs that cause initial excitement it sooner than later burned and became annoying to me...it's the opposite of a more subtle song that grows on you after several spins...but it still holds a special place in my heart. I remember there was hype at the time that the Knack were going to be huge..like the next Beatles...of course that never happened as they only had a couple more minor hits.

It's sad that so many of the artists I grew up with are passing away.
