Goodbye Turner South; Hello SportSouth!

Fox/FSN`s renamed it's acquired regional southern lifestyle & sometimes (now obviously all-sports) regional sports channel Turner South as SportSouth (wasn`t it SportSouth under Turner management before?). The 1st telecast under the new name`ll be on Oct.13 with the Atl. Thrashers vs. the Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes. They`ll also show a number of Hawks NBA games in addition to the Braves (80 games per season by 2008 when TBS ceases carrying them regulary) & some Reds & Cardinals action as MLB territorial restrictions allow. The story (from Multichannel News) also mentions Big South & Southern Conference collegiate sports as well.

FSN South was SportSouth prior to acquisiton in the mid-90's from...Turner Broadcasting.

I pointed out in the Atlanta board that this was ironic.

Still there. This will be a similar setup to what they have in Florida. FSN Florida was the former SportsChannel Florida...who was partly owned by Liberty, and focused pretty much on Miami sports...and who also happened to have an interest in Sunshine Network, which had most everything else.

Now theyre together under the FOX umbrella and its worked nicely, although for some reason, the Tampa area got Marlins games on FSN when the Rays were off..until August, when Marlins games were blacked out.

Dont look for either situation to change, as Comcast Sports figures to make inroads in both Georgia and Florida in the coming years. Fox will need all the local rights they can get....
 
They also have a duopoly in New York with FSN New York and MSG Network, sharing the sports rights of: New York Rangers, New York Islanders.... tumbleweeds...
