It looks like Citadel has pulled the plug on 690 the Sports Animal. This morning, then again this afternoon, I heard the station ID as "WJOX/WJOX-FM, Birmingham". There's no mention of it on the WJOX website.

The FCC website is still showing 690's calls as WSPZ. Maybe the database hasn't been updated yet... ???

During the day, the AM definitely outperforms the FM, no question about it. It's practically a local in Columbus, Mississippi and it's still clear on into Starkville (MSU territory). When the AM first went sports, I remember hearing callers from Chattanooga and the Atlanta area. Ever since 102.5 got yanked from the Tuscaloosa tall tower, I don't think any FM has had that kind of reach in AL.
If it weren't for the poor Shelby County coverage at night, I'd say it'd be a no-brainer to move the WAPI programming to the bigger signal. Sure they're both 50kw days, but API just doesn't get out like you think it would. Maybe paired with an FM translator? ;D
