Google Talk For Remotes??

Today I did some experimenting with Google Talk/Gmail Chat and Skype. The person I'm chatting with has had some serious bandwidth issues with RoadRunner at her home. There is a significant delay with Skype when we use video, but the audio is fine. Google Talk does not have the lag, and the voice quality is the same. So far, based on my limited experience and limited testing, Google Talk with Video beats Skype hands down for throughput.
I have done some Skype calls with others and it has worked perfectly. With a marginal Internet connection on the other end, Google Chat seems to be the way to go. Needless to say, I'm thrilled with both. The Skype interface is a little easier to use, but that may be because I'm used to it.

Roadrunner is the poorest internet service out there, since moving to Iowa and getting Mediacom I am in hog heaven. In general video is very intensive and will certainly reveal any issues with your connection. If you get good video online then any audio function should be just fine.
I would be interested in hearing others experience as to Skype vs Google talk though.
I noticed an option in Gmail where you can place telephone calls using a browser plugin, free until the end of the year. Then noticed something similar on my Google Voice account where it appears people could call and be routed to my Google Talk client (cheap phone hybrid maybe?).
Either way I wouldn't mess with it, many have said Skype works great and they also have something in the TOS stating broadcast use is OK if you mention their name.

Is anyone here having a problem with Skype or Google Voice? I did a GV to GV voice call to a talk show on Sunday, and my call quality was terrible. It sounded like I was in a hole. I was using an RE-20 with an external preamp into an M-Audio 2496 sound card. The problem was not that I was being picked up by the webcam mic, which often confuses some people.
Thereafter, I went back to Skype where I have a paid monthly plan. The Skype to Skype call on the same show was spectacular. Later, however, I was playing with Skype and noticed that when I call the Echo test number and count to 20, the volume of my voice increases during the entire count to the point of distorting at about 14 or 15. The automatic gain control is turned off. My Plantronics headset does not show the same problem.
The mic and preamp setup are not the problem because I also record with Adobe Audition on the computer. The levels are find in Audition. The computer is a fresh build of XP SP3. Any thoughts?
