Gordon Baxter

Got this from a friend of mine at KBMT TV just minutes ago...for those who worked with Bax (like I did) or read his articles in Flying magazine, it is shame to see another legend pass on...and reminds us of our own mortality.

I just found out a short time ago that Gordon Baxter passed away this
afternoon. He had been having respiratory problems. There is a story
about him on the Channel 6 web site at www.kfdm.com . I don't know
much beyond that.

Bax was an interesting character - as you say, he was very much into flying. He had a big celebration for his 80th birthday at the Holiday Inn in Beaumont last year, chaired by his long term nemesis, Al Caldwell. Actually, I think everyone had a good time. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Yeah I was there at the event (there were three former KLVI Engineer/DJs at our table...though I was the only one who stayed in the broadcast field the longest after that)... He will be missed

I wouldnt call Caldwell his nemesis.....they were very different in their ways back then.....Caldwell of course being at KAYC for all those years as a Top40 DJ...the only time Bax was a "top40" DJ was after KLVI switched from top40 to country, BAX played "Smoke on the Water" the 1st morning of KLVI being country!! (of course BAX played little music on KLVI udring his shift......I remember the morning "CB Savage" was playing as he walked into the control room....and promptly ripped the tone arm off the record making the distinct sound of the needle sliding across the record on the air!!! And then making some comment about "I aint playing no song about a fairy on my show".....even though that is not what the song was about! BUT that was BAX ...the limerick he told Linda Joyce in the newsroom just 5 minutes later off air had Linda choking on her coffee...but I shall not repeat it here..she commented he did that all the time to her!
