GORDON LIGHFOOT ON 107.5

I heard SUNDOWN by GORDON LIGHTFOOT the other morning on 107.5. Gordon Lightfoot
does not seem to fall into the format of this station. Perhaps a programming error?
Or perhaps a format adjustment is in progress?

Old Chicago

Programming tweak, perhaps? They just played Don McLean's "American Pie". Why shouldn't Gordon Lightfoot fall into the format of classic hits?

At least it's what makes this station a little more classic hits than classic rock.

If we could only "read their minds"... Someone might be making programming decisions while on the "levee in their Chevy...

Sorry. Just couldn't resist...

Radio programmers are acknowledging there was music made before 1980? When did this happen? :)

Sundown and American Pie have been in rotation from the start; they just don't play as heavily as something like Gimme Three Steps. My understanding is if it charted between 1970 and 1989 it has a shot at hitting the air.

Granted I haven't listened much since the first week, but it does seem that they've softened the playlist some since the last time I listened. If they're adjusting, I may start listening more otherwise, I'll be sticking with KGBC during the day.

That opens the format to a LOT of music. So if I call up and request...oh, I don't know, "Conga" by the Miami Sound Machine you're gonna play it, John? It was certainly a chart topper in its day, but is one of those songs completely overlooked by our "80's" station. How about White Lion's "When The Children Cry"? Another one that stood at #1 for some time locally for sure if not nationally, that hasn't seen the airwaves in over a decade. The 80's were my decade, John, and I'd be glad to keep your request line hot if that's what it'll take. ;)

In 2009, we all know that it means "if it charted during those decades, it has a shot of making the music test." After that, it's up to the opinion of the audience before it hits the air.

Now that you mention it, I think we played White Lion once upon a time at The Point. So stranger things have happened. But nothing happens on the air anywhere by accident. There's always a plan. Even when I worked for a mom & pop where the owner talked about aligning the celestial bodies as we launched his new "Smooth Rhythms" format (named Smooth Jazz 6 months later) there was always a plan.

But that's what's cool about radio. Where else can you create something out of thin air that sets moods, satisfies emotions, and evokes or creates memories?

You are dead on, John. There is no other medium like radio...an Ipod can not connect with it's listeners, and suffice it to say truthfully neither can a sattelite service. My dream is that your company will see some benefit in giving the "harder" sounding 80's music such as White Lion, Billy Idol, Poison, Motley Crue, etc. to The Eagle and open up The Point to more of the Pop songs that were truly chart toppers, i.e. C&C Music Factory, Gloria Estefan, New Kids on the Block.

Someone shoot me, I just mentioned New Kids. However, they DID have several #1's in their day, yet NEVER get airplay on The Point which touts itself as playing the "Best of the 80's". To me, it seems like it would be a better 1-2 punch than what's going on now. The two stations are stepping on each other's toes on a daily basis.

No kidding. I'm flashing back to being an intern answering phones signing up teens for a chance to get on the New Kids Party Plane to their show in LA back in the day... back when the biggest musical headache was how to separate all the Paul Abdul, Bobby Brown, and Janet Jackson titles from clumping together.

why not?

Gordon Lightfoot seems more "pop/soft rock" to me, and most of the music on 107.5
recently has not been "soft rock".

I'm posting this as a listener based on conversations I've had with non-radio friends:

I really stopped listening every time I got in my vehicle to go anywhere when they took Kevin off afternoons and then all the Elton John, Billy Joel, Carole King and other softer rock. (If it's still there they play it so infrequently I never hear it.) I realize I am not their target audience anymore but so did all my 45 year old female friends who I turned on to the station. None of us listen anymore. I'm sure if they returned the music we like we'll come back.

That's the way of most "classic" stations anymore. If they played music that encompassed the entire era from say mid 70s to the 80s we might all listen. In the 70's and 80's there was room for all those styles on one station - from the Stones to the Eurythmics to the Beatles to Elton John and many others we've mentioned here before in regard to our two dueling "classic hits/rock" stations. And they didn't play

Of the artists you mention, the only one I didn't play this weekend on 107.5 was Carole King.

If someone did a soft classic rock format, I'd listen. Last time I was in Orlando, I found myself listening to WMMO a lot (although looking at the last songs played list they're a lot poppier than I remember: http://wmmo.com/lsp/index.html ). I'm not sure if anyone would try it here, though.

WMMO is a great station. They shun all forms of processing and compression, therefore sounding a little "soft" on the dial, but also having the cleanest audio in Orlando. They also do not talk over music, and they do not cut pieces out of songs - like some stations here do. I heard a hatchet job on Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" the other day. Cutting it down to fit into three minutes or something. Atrocious - I thought cutting songs to be three minutes went out with top-40 in the 60's! Back to WMMO. I've heard them play DC Talk "Between You and Me" - and leave the Christian lyrical bridge in - a lot of Christian stations didn't even do that, strange that secular WMMO did! Bottom line, they really believe in the integrity of the work, as recorded by the artist, not to be modified by them in any way. Too bad they put their bays in the upper floors of a tall building (no joke) - giving them coverage problems. When I lived in Daytona, they definitely were not a very strong signal! Still, they have quite a following even with the bad signal.

And you may very well have, but I never hear them like I once did. I was just saying what my friends are telling me and what I have observed when I do tune in. The songs they liked singing along to are not on when they are listening. Do you daypart songs or expand the list on the weekends, perhaps?
