Gorman-Redlich EAS unit programming/set-up software??

Just bought a used Gorman Redlich EAS unit. I emailed the company about how to set-up the unit and the software listed on the website and got a reply that the unit would have to be sent in and factory re-programmed for at least $400.

We use several SAGE units and they are easy to set-up and all of the software and useful programs to set-up the unit are easy downloads to get a unit configured very quickly.

Does anyone have suggestions on how or if the Gorman EAS units can be self-programmed via a serial port, and if there are applications out there available to do this?

As usual, "it depends".

What version of Firmware is the unit running? That will determine if it needs to be sent in or not. If the firmware is current, you are good to go, and can do the setup with just the software on the web site. If the firmware is old enough, it may require a rework of the motherboard, hence the $400 fee.
 
I think V 5.6 is current enough to just run the setup program and be done with it. Keep in mind that the time won't be right because Jim Gorman does not think that the DST shift will stay for too long (he somehow thinks Congress will come to their senses and reverse the DST changes made last year), so the units sync to UTC, and are wrong in relation to local time during the summer months. Other than that, they work fine.
 
Also, you have to be real picky about which computers and operating systems you use to run the software. Jim Gorman says it has to be Windows 2000 or earlier. (No XP, and forget Vista)

And the units tend to not like laptops. So the best thing is if you have an old desktop unit laying around that you can haul over there to run the software from. MS DOS 6.22 is ideal, though it will work fine with 95, 98, or 2000.

Be aware that we will probably have to replace or upgrade all our EAS boxes sometime next year. This will be to accommodate internet-based CAP messages. Haven't had a chance to talk to Jim Gorman long enough to ask him if he will have an upgrade or new box out. (I live 45 miles from Athens, Ohio, where Gorman-Redlich is based.)
