GOSPEL RADIO IN ATLANTA

Who has the best Gospel programming and music in ATL right now and why? I love Gospel Music, but the format itself has a tendency to be too boring at times for my speed, and I'm often left scanning the dial back to Smooth Jazz, 102.5, or even 95.5 The Beat. Out of all the Gospel Stations, Praise 97.5 FM is the ratings leader, but they are not the only game in town, and they have been losing ratings recently. ATL is loaded with AM Gospel....WIGO AM 1570 "The Light", WYZE 1480, WTJH 1260 "The Joyhouse", WGUN 1010, and WAEC "Love 860" all play some Gospel Music and Religious Proramming (preachin' to the choir..lol) I also noticed that Praise has added some preachin' on Saturday Mornings even. Your thoughts on who sounds the best and what can be improved for this format? From a Sales standpoint, this format has always had challenges in the Urban Market. What can Gospel Radio do to improve its position in this economic downturn? Your thoughts?

Take a listen, and you decide:

The music on the different stations may be good if you like the styles they're in, but several of these stations fall too much in the dollar a holler category in allowing anyone who flashes enough money in their faces to be on the air. The worst I saw was WAEC allowing RG Stair on, even if it's just on weekends. It's sad that they used to be the pioneering CCM station in Atlanta. I know that they probably would have dropped CCM no matter what, but they could have at least tried to do a better job of what programs they allow on. :-\

Hi, I don't know if anybody else that's Christian that comes to this forum is from Atlanta. Of course, this forum is open to all religions not just Christian. If you are a Christian, you live in the Atlanta area, and you come to this forum then I am talking to you. Anyway, our smooth jazz station, WJZZ 107.5 is forecasted to have a format flip soon. For anybody that's in AM/FM radio, they're owned by Radio-One Atlanta, which also owns 3 other stations in the market: Praise 97.5 WPZE-FM in Fayetteville, an Urban Gospel station south of the city; Grown Folks 102.5 WAMJ-FM in Mableton, a Classic Soul station west of the city; and Hot 107.9 WHTA-FM licensed in Hampton with the transmitter in Peachtree City, a Hip-Hop Hits station also south of the city. Based on what I've heard on past format flips, the time for them to take place is usually on either holidays, the 1st of a month, anytime in between, or if it's a leap year (which it's 2009, so no leap year this year) it would happen on Leap Year Day. I have Praise 97.5 underlined because that's the one us Christians need to be rooting for if Radio-One Atlanta is making a decision on which one of the 3 stations to simulcast. There's more info about the flip at the Atlanta forum. Here's the link to the topic:

When you go to the topic, you'll notice that I put my 2¢ in. That 2¢ was a fairly good amount. We're basically making predictions in that topic. I just want to know whether or not any of you would be for a Praise 97.5 simulcast on 107.5. If any of you have Gospel Music Channel on Comcast (in Atlanta it's channel 198, on DIRECTV, it's channel 338, or if you have Sky Angel IPTV (Internet-Protocol Television) like yours truly has it, it's on channel 117), a group called INFUSION sang it best in a commercial they did, "I hear the people shouting we want gospel music." I don't know anybody from Radio-One Atlanta just to make that clear. I'm just a listener like the rest of you. There's no guarantee that Radio-One Atlanta will go through with this or not, but if any of the officials come to these forums and read our opinions (in other words, if you are willing to take a stand and say you're for Urban Gospel) there's a chance they will indeed take our opinions into consideration. With this being Martin Luther King Jr. Day Weekend, they may flip the format on that day. If you're one of those who likes to listen to format flips, the best times are 12AM (12 Midnight) (Sunday Night), the rest of these are on Monday: 6AM, 12PM (12 Noon), and again at 6PM. If it gets to 6PM and they never flipped, then they're either rescheduling the flip or cancelling it. Of course, you won't know that for sure if they're still playing smooth jazz music. So are you with me? Thank you.

I apologize for double posting. It's 5:10 A.M. in the morning as I'm typing this. I just thought I'd add in the fact before you post concerning whether or not you're with me, you may be wondering what person would be crazy about an Urban Gospel station possibly being simulcasted as a result of a format flip of a smooth jazz station; of course, you would think black people. Yes, that is true, but I am white because I see that from this music the blacks at times tend to have more faith than us whites and I have seen that truth confirmed through many of the artists you hear on not just Praise 97.5 but of course, 1570 The Light WIGO-AM in Morrow, and I don't listen to Gospel 1480 AM WYZE because they mix in more Black Christian Talk than music. That used to be true for Power 1010 AM WGUN in Conyers, but they've cut back on Black Christian Talk which is good if they want to improve ratings. I will probably be adding that one to my list along with AM 1260 WTJH in East Point. These guys may have disappointed me when I found out Reggie Gay wasn't on in the mornings there anymore, but I'm willing to give them a 2nd chance because they play great music. Love 860 AM WAEC, I rarely listen to because it's like Gospel 1480 AM WYZE, however, they mix in Black & White Christian Talk. If you hear any music, it may be on Friday & Saturday nights and that's it. I could be wrong. I am working on a program schedule for that station even though I don't work for that station. Do any of you know of a black female minister by the name of, I think it's "Pastor Zola Zaveris, Zaveres, Zeveris, or Zeveres"? Have any of you been able to hear the black spokesguy say that name clearly? Will one of you please let me know? Thank you.

EDIT: Just to make sure I don't double post again, I thought I'd add in the fact that if you read what I posted in the Atlanta forum concerning this you'll notice I translated the fact that my mother would be willing to listen to Urban Gospel on FM just not on AM.

Well, I already double posted 4 times. This being my 5th time. Once again, I apologize. Anyway, if any of you were with me none of you posted in this topic. After monitoring Smooth Jazz WJZZ 107.5 FM's playlist, they still haven't flipped formats. According to RoddyFreeman, another Radio-Info boards member who I would like to say is getting this info directly from the Radio-One Atlanta officials, they're telling him that the station plans to flip Wednesday night at 7PM and they plan to simulcast 102.5 FM WAMJ Grown Folks Radio as that station is properly called. There is also a rumor that Praise 97.5 FM WPZE may switch places with 102.5 FM WAMJ Grown Folks Radio thus the Grown Folks people would have the advantage of calling themselves 97.5/107.5 FM WAMJ/WJZZ (unless they come up with a new callsign for the 107.5 frequency) Grown Folks Radio. So if anybody lives in Woodstock, Acworth, and Lebanon, coverage will be slightly improved if Praise is moved to 102.5. I do thank everyone here for your patience, and especially the moderators of both this forum and the Atlanta forum; I also thank the administrator's patience. Even though I may have gone over the limit in double posting, please don't ban me from these forums because I already made it clear that I am a rule follower, and I have no intentions of breaking the rules on the forums. Thanks, again.

AMFMRadFan,

Your "double-posting" may be just on your computer - don't see it here (unless Radio-info is cleaning up after you ;D).

I live north of Atlanta and barely get 97.5 (which is better than if it moved to 102.5 - the 102.3 signal from Buford wipes it out already). Basically, if I want to get my dose of Urban Gospel, I listen to the WIGO and WYZE stream.
