Gotta Give Credit to Greater Media

Disclaimer: I am NOT a Greater Media employee since around here, when you praise a company, you're right away thought of as an employee. :p

It's been a good year or so since I've listened to any terrestrial Philadelphia radio stations besides KYW, but I gotta give props to Ben 95.7. I think it's the best sounding music station in Philly to be honest. Pretty wide playlist for corporate radio. All songs seem to have a "party" type feel to them making the station I think much more fun to listen to than say B-101. Imaging with John O'Hurley cracks me up every time. I think it's an all around good-sounding station in a land of corporate radio boredom. Anyone else feel the same way about Ben? 12+ ratings don't seem fantastic but maybe some insiders can explain if the station serves its purpose and if they think it'll last for awhile. I hope it does. I like it a lot. It brought me back to corporate radio, at least until I get bored with it. ::)

Giving credit is a good thing...let's give credit to Greater Media for taking WPEN-AM, operating it for 37 years, and doing whatever it took to make the station a player:

1) Purchasing the station in 1974 and signing it off the air for 10 weeks to totally renovate the antenna system and studios.
2) Launching 95 PEN as an AM-FM simulcast before rolling out WMGK.
3) Identifying the niche for WPEN's very successful Nostalgia format, and not opting to run satellite on it...staffing the station with major name stars, AM Stereo, leading WPEN-AM to be the #2 AM station behind KYW during that era.
4) Upgrading the station's day/night power and coverage with a 2-site system...from 5KW to 43kw.

WPEN was that company's entree into Philadelphia...and they should be recognized and appreciated for a good run.

It's over for AM...especially in the sales demos. Greater Media was smart for hitting the cash register while the signal still had some value.
