Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know"

Am I the only one who seriously thinks that the Gotye song "Somebody That I Used To Know" sounds like it is straight out of the early/mid-80s? I can't exactly pinpoint why. It's just so unique and simple compared to songs you will hear before and after it on CHR stations. Don't get me wrong - it's a great song. I'm just a little surprised it's having some success in this format. I guess Adele kind of surprised me too as a successful CHR artist.

I think this song's success is tied to the band's breakout YouTube video.

Agreed Pinewood..I was just about to reply that chrous is very sting sounding.

WHQC/Charlotte plays a slightly different version of this song than the original. It's a remix, but not a "dance" remix - it's just a little more rhythmic/beefed up sounding and not as....boring.

^Yeah, there's a remix out there with echoing/electronic drums in the background of the verses - kind of like the "enhanced percussion" in Gavin DeGraw's "Not Over You" which made it more CHR-friendly

I just think it's ridiculous how pop listeners get "bored" if there isn't a loud drumbeat in the background

The good news is that you can expect to see the majority of Cumulus CHRs start to finally add this in the coming week, now that it's oficially Top 20 at CHR/Pop.
It's already in medium rotation at Cumulus-owned
I-93 Dallas
Alice 107.7 Little Rock
93 Q Syracuse
98.9 Magic FM Colorado Springs
95.1 KHOP Modesto-Stockton-Merced

It's even Top 5 at Q-97.9 Portland (Maine), which recently became a Top 100 market.

Before the Cumulus buyout, stations like 92PRO/Providence and SX/Charleston probably would've long been on it (assuming SX wasn't having a "rhythmic" phase)...

I hate Cumulus
Yep, of all of the CHR's they've taken over, I'd say PRO's been "ruined" the most. I can't speak for the majority of them, but last I heard 95SX, their playlist wasn't that different, but more conservative with new stuff....

Cumulus just can't do CHR well. They do other formats decently, but CHR....ugh.

They're terrible at Hot AC also - what format are they good at? I guess their Alternative stations are decent, but they only own 4 or 5 (including 99X)

BTW I'd think people would be complaining about PRO-FM becoming so conservative - that's one of the most liberal areas of the country, and Cumulus is programming it like it's a station in Alabama

Their CHR's, Hot AC's, and talkers are the only formats I've ever heard anything negative about, really - they must do rock, classic hits, country, and Urban somewhat decently..

Did you guys notice that one day after this post, a large banner appeared on AllAccess reading "Congratulations Cumulus! Pro-FM pounds PPM 12+"

What the banner doesn't say is that the share numbers are actually slightly lower than they were for Pro-FM under Citadel - and that Clear Channel's Hot AC there, WSNE, is up 0.5 since Pro-FM dropped the Modern AC lean and WSNE picked it up it response

Their Country stations are generally very well regarded. It seems like their Urbans are as well.

Have you heard Cumulus CHRs from Alabama? :D

Funny that the Hot AC-ish station in Greenville, SC, WMYI, has started playing this song (actually they play the promos for the band/song more than the song itself, but they are playing it). But I have yet to hear it on our CHR, B93.7.

Definately agree it's a great song and hope the band gets some more airplay. This area is known for being a bit behind the times (heck, all the stations in the area were even pretty late in catching the Adele train last year, but now they play her to death).
