NJ needs its own news station. NJN puts too much emphasis on state politics . NBC 40 is not enough because it only covers a small swath of South jersey Counties. News 12 NJ should be called News 12 North Jersey it only covers Northern NJ for news. It Never goes south of Ocean County and not even seen on Cable from Burlington County on South ,but they are seen in Ocean County and they do cover news from there ocassionaly.
Perhaps the WNJB signal from New Brunswick should be flipped to commercial status, and that signal, once owned by a commercial entity not co-owned with a NY or Phila. broadcaster, should be permitted affiliation with one of the big 4 nets - providing most of NJ with a popular network station of its own. This would have to be pushed by NJ congressmen. Read wikipedia on WWOR's city of license move.
In return, the network [ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox] that affiliates with CH.58 can get some perk like a tax exemption or reverse compensation.
For example if CBS were to agree, a cable lineup in Northern NJ might have WCBS on CH2, as well as WNJB 'CBS 58 Cable 3' on Ch.3. That station might have its newsroom in Monmouth County, and have advertising and news specific to counties in the Northern and Central parts of NJ. The cable systems in Mercer County and Southern NJ could carry this channel on digital on a 3 digit channel.
In the Tampa Sarasota market, there are 2 ABC affiliates. In Sarasota, Comcast carries both ABC affiliates with WWSB 40 labeled as ABC7.
WWOR is the NY market's MyNetwork station and it isn't going to specialize itself to just [Northern] New Jersey, and WMBC, an independent, is too feeble [and likely uninterested] on its own to compete. However, there are stations like WFMZ 69 that will cover the Lehigh Valley, Reading, Monroe and Carbon County [part of Wilkes Barre Scranton DMA] news.
