GPB HD Radio Update

Well, it appears most if not all of the GPB Radio network is wired and ready for HD. Listening to WSVH in HD here in Hilton Head I noticed there are three subchannels. All 3 simulcast WSVH-FM's main GPB feed...though the HD-3 has a noticeable audio quality drop.

So, what do you think's going on up there in Atlanta? Will GPB Radio do like MS Public Radio and put a news/talk format on analog FM then place classical on HD-2? That seems to be the "in" thing to do at many NPR stations around the country...since most classical fans have both the money and the loyalty to buy an HD radio.

And what about that third lo-fi channel? BBC World Service? More talk? Eclectic? Jazz? Shoot, a "local" or All-Georgia channel?

Either way, looks very promising. I just wish ETV Radio here in SC would think the same way and start rolling out HD. Choices are good when it comes to public radio...especially for the station coffers, I'd imagine.

GPB probably will not be coming to Atlanta thanks to WABE. It is a top 10 station 12+, beating all of the top 40 stations, both oldies and classic hits, and one of the country stations (Atlanta now has PPM ratings, and they now publicly release the noncommercial stations now). They are the only real alternative to WSB-AM in terms of news programming. Looking at things now, it looks like it might not be worth the effort for the state to invest in Atlanta at this time.

They are just setting up everything, thus the simulcast on all three subchannels. I suspect they will copy the WABE model:
1) Main channel simulcast
2) Classical music 24/7
3) News/talk 24/7

I am surprised given the budget cutbacks (which include furloughs ordered by the governor, whose order would also include the GPTC), they are going ahead. It took them forever to go digital on the TV side (coming pretty close to missing the original deadline). They are just now starting local HD production (and Lawmakers, which is broadcast live, is still SD).

This is nice; I first noticed the GPB-HD signal while I was in Cordele (of all places) around Thanksgiving. I had my ZuneHD and it picked up the signal. Signal was crappy at first... when I passed thru on New Year's, the signal was much better.
