I was wondering about the HD radio rollout for GPB. Already noticed the Brunswick and Folkston repeaters have it.

Any clue if they're going to start an HD-2? Will all those translators in their name broadcast that HD-2? And is there any good reason why they decided to give the small towns HD radio over Augusta or Savannah?

Just a guess on my part, but they may be using the small-town roll-out to work out the kinks and the bugs before they go state-wide with HD. The www.gpb.org/radio website says HD radio is "coming soon" to Athens and Folkston, but no solid date is given that I could see. That, I think, supports my guess that they are introducing HD radio, eh, cautiously.

Or else they have seen the flop that HD radio is and have decided to spend money in other areas.

Well, I suppose that is possible. However, taxpayer-funded broadcast outfits might not be very likely to take on new technology without some reasonable period of transition. I'm not a big fan of the management of GPB, perhaps, but I think maybe I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now -- unless, of course Amy Scully has been put in charge of the implementation of digital technology.

By the way, where might a technologically semi-literate such as I find a discussion of this digital innovation (DTV as well)? I find that I am almost totally ignorant on the subject

Usually the taxpayer funded folks are the ones rushing in where angels fear to tread!

as far as discussions, you might want to check the engineering discussion board on here. I can't really think of anything with specific HD discussions for either radio or TV. After being out of television nearly 10 years, I have been called on to help a couple of low power stations make the transistion. I can tell you, it's a steep learning curve!
