I am just gonna toss something out here . I won't lay blame just some interesting facts. I grew up in New Jersey worked at some top radio stations in NY, PA, and NJ. It has always been a pet peeve ( if you will) that some of these mid to large market radio didn't have a gospel radio station on the FM dial. Well along comes live365.com that offered an opportunity for me to start my own "radio station" if you will and no it is NOT a pirate station because I do pay all music royalty fees. so you are asking whats my point well its this.
In 1991 I started GPN - Gospel Praise Network (A Miracle Works Inc company). The music format is a little (no make that a lot) wider in its music menu than that of the current "Praise network" (I call them Gospel CHR's). If you will is producing. I leave Philadelphia in 2004 after working since 1977 in Camden, NJ WTMR-AM, and philadelphia (WNAP-AM Gospel Highway 11) to come down to Houston Tx and low and behold my neice tells me that Philadelphia got two new stations both owned by Radio One WRNB-FM 107.9 yes like its competitor WDAS-FM (105.3) and a new Gospel station Praise 103 (WPPZ-FM) now that made me both glad and sad, glad because the Philadelphia market finally got a continious gospel station instead of these r&b station filtering in gospel music for some 3 - 6 hours on Sunday Morning. and sad because they waited (hapenstance here ) until I left the area to get one.
Down here in Houston I find out (while coming home from an evening fellowship service that I was playing for) gospel music on. I paid not too much mind to the music since KTSU-FM usually spends the entire day playing gospel music each sunday anyways, until my wife explains to me that the frequency was 92.1 I asked if she was sure and sure enough she was right. a new radio station emerges in Houston Texas. Then I find out its another Radio One product.
Whats my beef with Radio One. not too much Radio One (black owned and operated, more power to them!!!), is doing for the black comunity what Clear Channel is doing for mass market in general. A modified format CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio) for gospel is now on the rise. we can look forward to the same (hmm whats that number anyway 250 songs?) bombarding our eardrums over and over and over. Let me pause here. isn't that the reason why "Jack-FM invaded the US from England, (what was the name of that group that did the same thing in 1964? lol,?)
Whats the purpose of this article anyway. I have been playing gospel music on the internet for some 21 years now. most likely utilizing the same computer software that they are. and its oh so easy to do. grab a bunch of music, create folders for music, and "voicetracks" and or leave spots for local news, weather, traffic -- if you want to appeal to a local audience and then add maybe a radio personality or two (I hate the word dj).
I don't worry about Clear Channel nor Radio One as a whole because I am not infringeing in on their market as a matter of fact, I see what I have done BEFORE they came along as an augmentation of music but larger for a little guy. Don't take internet radio lightly. It has grown leaps and bounds and not many radio stations can boast that they have had a format for more than 20 years as a whole. My concern is I have been using the "Praise" format since 1983 and now like "weed" all of these "praise" stations are popping up all over the place. (Its like they listened in on my station, took the format and spreaded it over the US if only Gospel can run rampant like that hmmmmm makes one wonder.) only difference is, I have more than 10k songs that I use and try to minimize how often a song is repeated through out a broadcast day.
GPN - Gospel Praise Network is an off shoot of a company I formed back in 1983 Miracle Works Inc (GPN), which then became the Miracle Works Radio Network (if you happen to see the letters MWRN on a mic that I had created for me) and then Gospel Praise Network.
I use a basic formula of; if you hear Yolanda Adams "Be Blessed" as an example at lets say 8:00 in the morning, then you will be lucky if you hear it again around 9:30 that evening.
I see the basic premises. its like your news or traffic station. we will always be on when you want to hear us. Problem is, hearing repetitious music over and over that close together makes music rather boring. So here comes the plug. If you like the "praise" format but want more variety in your music and you happen to be on the internet, then take a look and listen to the Gospel Praise Network on the net. and yes technology is out there that you can now take your internet radio with you anywhere. so internet radio is not just for the computer anymore. wonder if I am raising any eyebrows in radio execs yet.
I gave away most of my seacrets (just don't steal them lol) you can hear the station at http://www.miracleworksradionetwork.org/index.htm click on the mic which will take you to live365.com. You register with them (I have no control over that I wish I did though), and you can listen. Want to make a suggestion, or comment, or request, you can either do it through email at [email protected], or through yahoo by adding gpnradio to your contact list or now through myspace at http://www.myspace.com/gospel_praise_network and request to be a friend. I had to get this off of my chest. its not about the music only for GPN its a music ministry saving souls one song at a time. and the difference, I will most of the time play music by up and comming independant gospel artist where as these larger radio network won't take the time.
