Grading CT's stations

I saw a grading thread in the NYC board.. so I figured lets try it.

What would you grade the stations in the Hartford-New Britain, New Haven, Bridgeport and Stamford markets?? And what changes would you make?

Opinions as well...

???

WYBC ( New Haven ) A+ . WZMX ( Hot 93.7 Hartford ) A+ . Power 104.1 ( Hartford ) B . Kiss 95.7 ( Hartford ) F . WTIC ( Hartford ) C . Jamming 107.7 ( New London ) B- . WKCI ( New Haven ) C. Wishing you was still here list ,WTIC VS WKSS ( 2 CHR/POP Stations at it best in The 90's ), 910 Jamz ( Great station until Hot 93.7 Killed 910 Jamz ).and WAAF Signal in Hartford Area .

I have to disagree with you about JAMZ 910. While it filled the Urban void until and FMer signed on, it wasn't a great station. It played mostly R&B and Slow Jams and rarely played hip-hop. Despite its technical short comings BLAZE 990 was a better Urban station than JAMZ 910. BLAZE played a lot of hip-hop and didn't play as much R&B. It also played a decent amount of Old School and Regaee music.

I'm in the Southern western part of the state so I will grade the stations in the New Haven, Bridgeport and Stamford markets..

WKCI - C+/ Seems to me they repeat songs more than any normal top 40 station.
WYBC - A/ Enjoyable to listen to
WELI - B/ Good local News station
WPLR - B-/ They need to broaden their playlist more
WICC - B/ Have gotten better lately with local talk
WEZN - B/ Sounds good during the day... Delilah kills the grade
WEBE - A-/ Does a great job with the Soccer moms
WFOX - B+/ Good average classic rock station
WCTZ - A/ Good classic hits

I must take issue with WELI being a good local news station. CC has gutted that place and they do their "local" news out of Syracuse. WQUN does a much better job at covering the New Haven area. They have reporters in the state.

Well, let me weigh in on this

In terms of dial spots:

AM:

WICC 600--local talk is too fluffy--needs to discuss CT angles on major national stories. But their news operation is SOLID. Aside from WTIC, CT's best news operation--except for Wayne Winsley--weak presentation--and they still play some music on weekends with Al "Mr. WICC" Warren. Plus UCONN hoops and Yankees baseball--can't really go wrong with that. OVERALL: B

WSTC/WNLK--I used to work for them many years ago--other than for Fairfield County traffic, Boortz, Jerry Doyle and Savage--not a fan of their news presentation--and some of their announcers need training--one Evan Goldman sounds like a girlie man! And they are your prototype Cox affiliate--loud imaging for news and writing tighter than a pair of Jordache Jeans. OVERALL: C-

WGCH--Used to work for them--BIG MISTAKE! Still think their programming is snooze inducing, except for News Center AM--truly the way to cover hyper-local issues in the community. And like STC/NLK, some of their male announcers come off sounding effeminate--not Tony Savino, the station News Director and N-C anchor, also a nice guy as I worked with him at 1400/1350. And I do hold it against them that they carry Red Sox baseball and their high school football coverage is nothing more than being carried by a weak cell phone. Won't hold it against them that they carry Fox News Radio and really cover lower Fairfield County. OVERALL: C+

FM:

WEDW--well typical NPR fare, though they have dumped their classical music for NPR News and Talk and the BBC. yawn--OVERALL: C

WSHU--see above, only with classical music

WFOX--typical classic rock station despite the apt call letters--overall: C

WCTZ--this is a station that really suffers from another bunch of effeminate male DJ's. Imaging is too much at times like JACK. Then again this is adult hits and they have broadened their playlist. OVERALL: B-

WEZN--not really a fan of this station, but mom and cousin are. One reason--Tommy Edison and traffic. Other than that, Cox controls how many times the 300 song list gets repeated. And Delilah takes things way out of format. OVERALL: C

WEBE--The benchmark. Nearly 25 years since coming on and the station just never knows when to quit. Music mix is decent enough and many of their DJ's have been along for the big ride. Their Studio 108 program has broadened out, yet it's a miracle it's still on. Sorry their program with Elizabeth Yates failed so they're back to Tesh--UGH! But I have noticed they are using their music combined with Tesh liners instead of airing the actual show like on WFAS-FM in White Plains. OVERALL: B+

I will take umbrage with WELI being a local news station. Is it REALLY LOCAL when it's done by ISDN from Syracuse? Other than Jerry Kristafer, it's not really local. WQUN, which I do not listen to, I guess outdoes ELI in terms of New Haven coverage. Then again Quinnipiac has decent pockets to feed this station and Q-U is known for their communications school.

yeah you're right, however with Glenn Beck on WELI, it gives the New Haven general public another "local" personality. Yes I know he's national now, yes I'm aware of every argument you could make about Beck...just remember how long he's continuosly been on in New Haven between KC101 & WELI. When he left for FL, I believe he was still syndicated on ELI. (and if he wasn't, it was only for a short time).

Calling a nationally syndicated host "local" is a real reach.

No, I'd give them a A for that.

Why carry the Yankees or Mets when those games are available on 50 kw NY flamethrowers? They are certainly not going to persuade Yankees fans from listening to the powerful signal of WCBS or get Mets to switch from WFAN. That would be a suicide mission. In fact, I am not even sure that they could carry those games, being so deep in the local territory of those 2 stations.

What they are doing is creating a niche, which can be hard to do for a little, local am signal. If as little as 5% of the people in the listening area are Red Sox fans (and there are a few there), that's still enough for the little am station to make a good living on. And, those people will listen for a long time too, giving the station a good average TSL.

So, not only is it good business, it's pretty darn smart. ;)

I don't think so...I gotta agree with the other guy...Glenn being on in CT for as long as he has (what? almost 20 years now? Early 90's?) makes him familiar and local in my opinion!

To politely disagree with the gentleman from RI. being local means you actually broadcast locally from the station in which you are heard. Anything else is syndicated...or even worse...voice tracked.

To argue for the other position would mean that "Meet The Press" with Tim Russert is a local show in Albany 'cause he spent time there (or was it Buffalo?)

Or that Hannity the hateful is local in Atlanta.
