grand forks radio

I am curious to know why CLEARCHANNEL is not streaming any of their stations in Grand Forks as they stream almost every market. I enjoy listening to radio from small towns in the US, escepially if they close to the Canadian border as I am writing from Canada.

If you are in GF and is listening to a radio in the car or on a boombox, is is possibly to pick up Winnipeg, MB?

I don't remember what I heard on FM there (it's been a couple of years) but would be surprised if you can't get at least weak car-radio signals from some Winnipeg FMs.

AM, definitely. 680 and 990 are plenty strong in Grand Forks. Probably pretty much every AM left in Manitoba of more than 1,000 watts is probably good car-radio reception in Grand Forks, but 680 and 990 stand out in my memory.

(heck, at night 990 is plenty strong in Illinois, let alone Grand Forks... 730 and 880 from western Manitoba as well. I even heard 920 Portage la Prairie in Milwaukee a week ago -- even though there's a local on that frequency!)

Is there anyone on this board who lives in GF? I would not mind a current aircheck from KJKJ 107.5 If you are able to record it, please send it to me via sendspace.com
I enjoy listening to radio from small cities in the US.

Thanks

I used to be at KJ108/CC a few years ago, but I'm not working in the GF market anymore.  I'll attest it's a well programmed mainstream/active rocker with a great morning show.

I grew up with CKY and CKRC and was bummed to see them disappear. I used to work overnights at 1310 KNOX back in the 70's and would get calls from Winnipeg. That always surprised me because what did KNOX have that Winnipeg didn't have besides the excitement I provided? :D

I'll be Grand Forks next week and can roll some tape for you. Do you want anything else besides KJ108?

Who wants a copy of You Rule Me by the Cornerstones? ;D

Hi Jimbo,

Thanks for replying. I would not mind an aircheck from KJ 107.5 and KNOX 94.7 I like hearing rock/classic rock stations from small cities as they seem to have more local programming and the music library seems to be more creative. I prefer those stations over hearing stuff from NYC and other big cities.

Would you be able to upload the airchecks to sendspace.com or yousendit.com It is easier than having to go through the mail.

I am enjoying the online radio from Fargo.

sure, I will record them on Friday Dec 26 which should be more typical of their sound rather than before Christmas. I can upload the mp3 files to some kind of fileshare site. Do you want scoped or unscoped?

Cheers!

um... KJ is doing A to Z then.  I remember CKY and CKRC, too.  CBW and CJOB almost city-grade GF, and occasionally show up in the books.

AAAAHHHHHHHH

The Forks... I worked there.. it was one of the best places to live and wolk... Great people, and the competition was stiff.. many up and comers who really made you work to get your ratings.

I remember while I was there I was the voice for Radisson Inn Suites across Canada. And did those great trips up to Winnipeg to go watch pro hockey without driving an outrageous distance.

Down here in Fargo we do hear CJOB on occasion.. Still great to hear what our neighbors listen to.

As far as KJ, I would say it's been a factor in GF radio for a long time.

Hi Jimbo,

I like to hear the airchecks unscoped...I like hearing local commercials than national ads you would hear in big cities.

What does AM sound like at night from GF and Fargo? On FM..can you distant stations from GF and Fargo in summer? I heard the midwest is good for dxing in the summer.

It has been a good year for DXing Most 5kw AM stations have no problem being picked up to the north and east between the hours of 4 am and sunrise. There has been some 400 mi. skips with the 100kw fm's. I have picked up stations as far away as Cuba, and Hawaii on the Am band at around 2 am CST.

can stations from Toronto/Buffalo be picked up at night in GF and Fargo? The strongest AM stations in Toronto are AM 740 - standards, 860 which is french, 1010 CFRB and 1050 CHUM. Can you get stuff from Denver, L.A at night?

There's a 740 *in* Fargo. No on the other three from Toronto, no from LA, yes from Denver.

When I was in GF last May, I was getting Fargo (just signed on in the past year) with Toronto in the background on 740 at night. Ben Maller goes great with Roberta Flack! ;D

That area is great day *and* night for AM DX'ing. Daytime, due to the 30+ soil conductivity. Nighttime, due to the relative absence of local AM signals during daylight hours.

My grandparents lived in Michigan, ND. I was always amazed at being able to hear little 1kW AMs from 100+ miles away. Rugby, Jamestown, Moorhead (1280), Mandan (1270), etc. The Winnipeg AMs on the lower half of the band (580, 630, 680, 810, 990) were of local strength there.
