Hi all. Was just wondering how the radio job market was for Grand Junction. I might be moving to MOntrose in the near future so my pregnant g/f can be near her family and help raise our kid in a good environment. I was looking at stations like Magic. It reminds me alot of when I was on air at Q100 in atlanta (now here in vegas). Anyhow just insight on average payscale etc. I hear quality of living is great in that area, very laid back and cost of living is less expensive....at least cheaper than vegas. Thanks

Hey Ren, I personally have never worked in Junction or Montrose, but I know folks who have. The Grand Junction area may sport a population of 113,000 but it's more small-town radio than anything else. Cumulus is involved so you can bank on a lot of voice-tracking. Unless you can get a drive-time, full-time gig I wouldn't bank on radio being your primary job (and even then I'd still be prepared to pick up an odd job), especially if you plan to live in Montrose and commute to Junction. You're talking about a 120 mile roundtrip commute. Highway 50 is a decent road and it's not a technically challenging drive but I still wouldn't wanna do it in a blizzard.

The quality of living is really good in that area. At least in Junction it's fairly warm year-round, and you've got Grand Mesa, the Colorado River, and the mountains are less than an hour away.

Expect a culture shock going from Vegas and Atlanta to small-town Colorado. It's much slooooooooower there.

If you want a pay scale comparison, a buddy of mine was looking for a mid-day jock 3 or 4 years ago in Colorado Springs (Market #97). Starting pay was less than $25k. Junction is Market 264. Good luck and congrats on the upcoming birth!

Blue,
Thanks for your words, much appreciated. Yeah I know Grand JUnction is small market radio and wudnt expect to roll in $$. BUt we're in radio and NONE OF US expect to roll in it!! lol ;) I wud defin be looking for full time night or drive time gig. I know grand junstion is one of the top places to buy real estate and develope a business since both GJ and montrose are growing so fast. Thanks for the comparison!

Hey,
I just saw your note today. I worked in Grand Junction back in the mid 80's for about 8 months. Great little place but I had to leave. Being down in that valley made me wish for large flat areas where I could see farther than the top of the Grand Mesa.......guess I felt a little too closed in there.

Good luck to you.
