Grand Strand Radio obvservations

Was in MB for the 4th of July and wanted to share a few observations....

Picked up "Sound 107.1" and I was wondering what the format is. It seems to be classic rock with a deep catalog, stuff you don't hear anymore on other classic rock outlets. But, I could have swore I heard a country guitar instrumental and music with a decided AAA flavor at times.

Hot 100 and Mix 97.7 seemed to be locked in mortal combat and both sounded really good. Both overplayed Gwen Stefani's Hollaback but both did a good job mixing in the up-tempo songs and giving them the proper afternoon and nighttime rotation. On the days I listened, Hot was a little more Hip Hop reliant, while Mix's playlist seemed a little tighter.

Another big surprise was the "Easy" stations. Hailing from an area that long ago chucked the standards and instrumentals formats, I was stunned to hear the format still lives. I tell ya, you haven't lived until you hear Phil Collins' Sussudio arrainged by an orchestra.

KZQ was all over the place and seems torn between an active rocker and alternative. Still, it wasn't uncomfortable to listen to. They also appear to be using the same jingle package from years back.
