Bless them, they are not playing that atrocious piece of trailer park dreck in their wall-to-wall five-week Christmas fest. No Elmo and Patsy. I commend PD Sheri Van Dyke.

Sounds like they may also have banished "The Chipmunk Song," too, which I didn't really mind that much.

But they are playing "Dominick the Donkey," which is as bad as it gets for novelty stuff.

That's always a punchout, as is the song about the shoes and that dreary "Mary Did You Know" by Kenny Rogers.

It's interesting how many non-3WS '60s and '70s artists emerge when they wheel out the Christmas stuff -- Carpenters, Bob Seger, Springsteen, John Lennon, Jose Feliciano, Brook Benton, Roger Miller, Sinatra, Dean Martin,
 
Which station is the one that inflicts "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" on the airwaves? One of the guys in the office had it on the other day. He was almost banished until January. And who recorded that piece of audio torture?

Interesting you would say Carpenters (I've heard them before on 3WS outside of Christmas music); Seger (they play him outside of Christmas music); Brook Benton, John Lennon and Roger Miller (on the Diner). These artists have all been played outside of the Christmas format on 3WS and not just once. Perhaps more than once, but yet noticeable.

What I find offensive is the Chanuka Song by Adams Sandler. It's not even funny. Hearing stuff like that and that worn out Hippo song (yes, I've heard it on 3WS).

My salutations to Ms. Van Dyke for not putting on the dreaded Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. That is the absolute WORST song around. Also, please banish Celine Dion. She makes Elmo and Patsy bearable.

Also my salutations to Ms. Van Dyke for putting artists like Harry Connick in, Clay Aiken; Christina Aquilera; Barenaked Ladies; Brian Wilson; Diana Krall,Jessica Simpson, etc etc. More of these artists and less Celine, Amy Grant, and Gloria Estephan. More Temps, and other Motown artists, too please.

With all this being said, you have to admit this year's selection of songs on 3WS are far better than last year's, under the direction of OldiesCat's buddy.

That's Gayla Peevey circa 1953. Apparently, she was somewhat of a child star in the Oklahoma City area at that time. She even did some TV, an episode of "Naked City" comes to mind. The story goes that the OK City zoo did not have hippo in their 'stable' of critters, so little Gayla recorded this song in order to increase public awareness. The song was picked up by Columbia records, no less. Anyway, I'm not sure exactly how, but a hippo was indeed procured and given to young Gayla who promptly donated the beast to the zoo. Smiles all around. BTW, Gayla Peevey had a career in advertising and is currently living in Southern California, I believe. These days she spends time in her garden, is active in the ministry and answers many questions about her only 'hit'. Believe it or not, year after year,it's one of the most requested Christmas tunes here at K*LUV in Dallas. But, as with most songs of this genre, a little goes a long way!
 
3WS needs to turn up the tempo

when I'm in the mood for holiday music I like WLTJ's holiday selection to me it seems more up tempo than 94.5 3WeStink I mean 3WS, and I really don't think that Miss PD at 94.5 has any control of the holiday music I believe that decision is made from another part of the CC world and she receives the "email of the day" from corporate programming on what to add and what to pull musically and she just nods and does what they say and cash's the check every 2 weeks

C'mon, you know Dr. Detroit cannot let anyone else have the last word, ever. He'll find something to say that tries to make any career move outside of radio, no matter how positive or lucrative, look like a failure.

3WS plays nothing by the Carpenters in regular rotation. They play one Seger track, "Good Old Rock 'n' Roll." Roger Miller is NEVER played on the Diner and they'd probably laugh if you called and requested him. They may play "Imagine;" otherwise, they ignore Lennon's solo stuff.

Well, you'd be wrong about that. There is significant local content on 3WS that wouldn't be part of the rest of the CC cluster doing a Christmas format. Johnny Angel and Pure Gold are staples of the 3WS rotation, as well as the tracks cut for their Christmas CDs produced by Mikey Razor many years ago.

Regardless of who is making the decisions, Christmas music needs to be programmed with the same level of skill as any other kind of music. The principles of working songs together so that your station doesn't sound like a train wreck don't disappear just because it's almost the Christmas season.

Going from "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" to "Christmas Canon" with a non-Christmas song in between which is what 3WS played between 9:59 and 10:05 this morning) isn't a good example of careful song selection.

And who is the genius that decided that any song about winter weather qualifies as a "Christmas" song? What does "Frosty the Snowman" have to do with Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, or Ramadan? Or, for that matter, "Winter Wonderaland"? Is there no snow in January or February?

Does that mean that "Summer in the City" is a patriotic song, since the 4th of July happens in the Summer?

I have heard the Carpenter's "Superstar" on the lunch show, as well as "Rainy Days and Mondays". And, I've heard it more than once.

Granted, they only play one Seger track all the time, and a second not as often, but they play Seger.

Roger Miller has indeed been on the Diner.

I agree with you on the Lennon stuff. Perhaps more than the worn-out "Imagine" should be in there.

Whoever that genius is, they've been doing it for years. "Frosty the Snowman" has been heard on stations during the "Christmas time" long before the Christmas format became the format of choice by greedy GMs and stations that are about to flip format. If I heard Winter Wonderland or Frosty or any other song grouped within this format outside of the Christmas "calendar", then I would think whoever is programming is just plain stupid.

Even I think your thinking on this is ludicrious, and I usually see your point!

I know that. I was just going off on a "bah humbug" rant. It gets tougher and tougher to try to maintain any semblence of "Christmas spirit" when between the radio stations jumping the gun, the stores putting up Christmas decorations at Halloween time, and crap like "Sparkle season".

Christmas is more than two weeks away, and I'm already getting burned out with holiday overkill. Maybe most other people aren't yet, but I'll bet that by December 20th, most adults will be like me wishing the whole ordeal was over.

It sucks that so many businesses screw up Christmas.

Right on about the Sparkle Season crap and being burned out by a six week Christmas. We used to have three holidays between October 31st and December 25th, and one of those in now forogotten.

Can you imagine how the staff at 3WS feels if we're feeling this way? I'm going to have to ask my salesgal over there what they feel about this Christmas music.

I work at a hot/ac that is also all Christmas. For the 3rd year in a row, Hippo is the most requested song we have. Domimick the Donkey, Christmas Shoes, Dear Mr. Jesus, and Mary Did You Know all are very strong this year. Despite how most of us radio people feel about all Christmas, the response from the audience is overwhelmingly positive.
