That's the rumor, which of course we would never repeat.
I read somewhere that 1,000 CC people would be canned nationwide, which works out to less than one per station, but that's a lot of people no doubt and it would seem that San Diego could have half-a-dozen or more people affected.
When I worked at KHJ in 1980, I came into work one morning to start my shift as the midday/afternoon news guy. News director Lee Marshall came into the newsroom as I was ripping the wires, leaned his elbow on one of the teletype machines and informed me, "Bob, the recession axe has fallen and you've been cut."
I went into HR (which which was still called Personnel in those days) later that day to get my final check (which was quite nice thanks to my AFTRA contract) and the poor lady in charge in was just about in tears after having to give a dozen or so people their walking papers in one day (I was the only AFTRA worker let go that day, but the non-union people got next to nothing).
