Gray buying Raycom for $3.6 billion

Wow the largest stations affected by the Gray/Raycom deal is WOIO-TV Cleveland currently owned by Raycom and Raycom just started their own version of Newsy recently called Investigate TV though. How this will play out for Gray is pending. Plus I understand why this move happened though. RayCom and Gray traditionally went after Nexstar and Sinclair in most parts of the country though for ratings and Revenue in medium and smaller markets.

It will affect NBC affiliate WLBT 3 in Jackson, Miss. 3 also operates WDBD Fox 40 (American Spirit license) as well WLOO MyTV 38 (Vicksburg but Tougaloo College is licensee).

I didn't see this listed, but I believe Raycom also has some regional sports networks.

Raycom's big syndication deal for some time now has been the ACC basketball and football packages, but those expire in August when ESPN launches the ACC Network. No play for Mr. Gray, as Walt Frazier used to say in that classic Just For Men ad.

Raycom and Gray has released an official statement on the deal and they have mentioned that they have overlap markets in Georgia, Ohio, Texas, Florida, Alabama and Tennessee. Note we don't know yet on who is being divested due to the Gray/Raycom merger and where are the divested stations are going to yet.

What Gray is known for is in overlapping areas buying the programming from the station they "dont want" and move it to a sub (or LP station...or both) of the station they own. Then selling the leftovers to someone who will put diginets on it (or something similar).....see KRDK Fargo (the former KXJB), KHME Rapid City, SD (the former KOTA), KNBD & KNDM Western ND (the former KNDX & KXND)

The Gray-Raycom purchase will exclude the newspapers which Raycom purchased last winter, according to the Boston Herald. A separate buyer will be sought for those properties.

Most likely Digital First, the vulture capitalist pseudo-publisher that's currently sucking the Herald and many other papers dry. The Salem News was the local daily for me growing up on the North Shore. I hope it winds up in good hands.
