Gray Media CEO: Optimistic FCC will approve local TV swaps, acquisitions

Here is a follow up and this time it’s Gray Media getting fcc approval to get some of the divested Allen Media Stations.

Gray Media said it expected the acquisitions to go through no later than the fourth quarter (Q4) of last year. It wasn’t immediately clear why the closing of the transaction was delayed. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The stations covered by the deal are:

  • KADN (Channel 15, Fox & NBC) – Lafayette, Louisiana
  • WCOV (Channel 20, Fox) – Montgomery, Alabama
  • WAAY (Channel 31, ABC) – Huntsville, Alabama
  • WFFT (Channel 55, Fox) – Fort Wayne, Indiana
  • WEVV (Channel 44, CBS & Fox) – Evansville, Indiana
  • WREX (Channel 13, NBC) – Rockford, Illinois
  • WTHI (Channel 10, CBS & Fox) – Terre Haute, Illinois
  • WSIL (Channel 3, ABC) – Harrisburg, Illinois
  • WTVA (Channel 9, ABC & NBC) – Columbus, Mississippi
  • WLFI (Channel 18, CBS) – West Lafayette, Indiana
“Six years ago, Allen Media Group began the process of investing over one billion dollars to acquire big four network-affiliated television stations,” Allen said in a statement at the time. “We have received numerous inquiries and written offers for most of our television stations, and now is the time to explore getting a return on this phenomenal investment.”

Allen Media only existed because of the ownership caps.

All but a couple of their stations were acquired as part of divestitures from other mergers. In this transaction:
WTHI and WLFI were spun off when Nexstar acquired Media General.
KADN and WEVV were spun off when Nexstar acquired ComCorp of America.
WREX and WSIL were spun off in the Quincy-Gray deal.

Gray's acquisition of several stations, mostlyin the midwest, from Allen Media closed yesterday.

I think there possibly could be a bit of a flurry of attempted deals to try to leverage the current regulatory environment that doesn't object to them.

And also the deal swap with Scripps which Gray now owns WSYM FOX47 in Lansing and for many years did the news for FOX47 until Scripps wanted to start a low-budget newscast/newsroom as FOX17 Weather Mets were doing the weather for FOX47 in Lansing.

Here is more Gray Media gets the stations owned by Block Communications.

The transaction secured all necessary sign-offs from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) this month, despite opposition from DIRECTV, Newsmax and a handful of public interest groups.

The stations that are covered by the deal include:

  • WAND-TV (Channel 17, NBC) in Decatur, Illinois
  • WBKI (Channel 51, the CW Network) in Louisville, Kentucky
  • WDRB (Channel 41, Fox) in Louisville, Kentucky
  • WLIO (Channel 8, NBC & Fox) in Lima, Ohio
  • WOHL (Channel 35, ABC & CBS) in Lima, Ohio
The deal with Block Media is the latest transaction involving Gray Media acquiring or swapping local TV stations with others. Earlier this week, Gray Media announced it had finalized a transaction involving nearly a dozen stations previously owned by Allen Media Group. Last year, Gray Media and the E. W. Scripps Company agreed to exchange TV stations in markets where both companies already owned at least one outlet, thereby creating new market duopolies in those communities.

Lansing is a 2 station town Nexstar & Gray since Scripps has left the building. Which Scripps should've kept Gray doing the news for WSYM and not starting their own newsroom which didn't work out for them even the owner before Scripps bought Journal tried and just let channel 10 to do the news for them in 2004 or 2005 I believe.
