Great 108 PD Gig in PCB!

So Double O is running an ad on allaccess for a PD for PFM. Described as a "Great PD opportunity... for a legendary CHR leader." Doesn't mention their current #11 ranking--though, in fairness, they are the #2 CHR in market #240 (seeing as how Island is ahead of them by a share or so).

Question is... what would you do with the Great 108?

Me? I'd vote--at this point--to bail from today's version of CHR, engaged as it is in a losing battle with iPods for the attention of the 12-24 demo, and let Island die that grueling death by itself--and instead re-create a 1970's-1980's version of a CHR/Top 40 aimed at 35-49 year olds. Adult Hits by another name. Take a bite out of Sunny & PAP's stranglehold on the paltry pot of Panama City radio advertising bucks.

Hey Tibbs--here's our chance. Besides, they won't have to pay me cash. Just a few strategic trades: a beachfront condo, beer, Hooters...

still got that great signal? nobody else around on 107.9?

There's a 100kw on 107.9 in Pascagoula, Mississippi that cuts into the signal to the west. There's a new LPFM on 107.9 that takes out Tallahassee. There's also a new Class A on 107.9 in Montgomery and a C2 on 107.7 near Andalusia to cut the signal to the north. WPFM isn't the monster it was in 1985.

RNR --- I'm in if you are. Minimum 5-year contract, because I wanna see the thing through
and not have some corporate tool cut us off when the level of success exceeds them.
We oughta get paid in dollar bills....and maybe a few bottles of Champagne and good
Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

How long would it take to be #1?? Six weeks.

I can go on auto-pilot asap and will be happy to do mornings (by VT only...hehehe.) I am serious.
That whole company needs to be taken to the mat and rebuilt. Hey, wonder if Holmes
and Mr. J. C. Yoda are up for a minimum wage radio war? Real question...can we re-create
the magical??? Not a chance we could fail if they leave us alone.

Signals a little to far north for perfect coverage. I think the recently absent-cceng will confirm
the PFM tower is about 15-20 miles to far up and moveable south with little problem
so even if more fish listened, it would blast the beaches on 98.

What was was. But, what it is now is bah-bah-bad. It could be updated and active.
Just takes a little love and tenderness. Not like there is that much good competition.

E-mail me and go get the gig. Hope you're well, up north, rnr. Did we just miss the 'holiday'
season??? It would be GREAT.

The idea would not be to re-create the magic. But to create a new kind of magic that feels just as good!
I was there. Dantzer wouldn't hire me but he gave me the wisest advice anyone ever did in the process..

Hey Tibbs, as you and RNR do the transition for launch this song keeps coming to mind, Byrds - "Eight miles high...and going nowhere....". Also, six weeks is a very conservative estimate 'cause it'll be more like one work week.

LOL!!! Reality is that neither of us could take the cut in pay, but wouldn't it be fun? Holmes is still in the programming biz, isn't he? He'd be a great pick.

Never having worked for Oh-Oh Broadcasting, I'd just be guessing, but my guess is that the important--strategic--decisions are made by the guys at the top, CEO Terry Bond and COO Bill Thomas, and the track record thus far doesn't reflect much of an understanding of the PC market. So the risk for any PD would be having one's hands tied by the corporate level's preconceived notions of what to do and how to do it--and then catch the blame when it doesn't work.

And the more you read--and the more you study the trends in the "CHR demo," the more it looks like the people who constitute that demo ain't listening to radio--at least not nearly as much as we did 30, 20 or even 10 years ago. The problem, then, is that even a GREAT CHR can fall flat on its face. (Arbitron & Edison Research release another study this Wednesday on the subject--should be interesting stuff).

They've been banging away at it as a CHR for 3 or 4 years now, and have a #11 ranking to show for it. And by the sound of the All Access want-ad, they seem determined to stay the course.

Unless they do get someone like Holmes--a CHR whiz who really knows the market--it could be more tough sledding. (BH: hold 'em up for ransom)!

Sledding? Yeah, we've still got snow on the ground up here! That beachfront condo + beer + Hooters trade sounds mighty tempting...

CCENG on JennyWoo's laptop here.....yep you could move 107.9 south some.....remember it is currently 25 miles NE of Panama City, the site is just east of hwy 231 on hwy 20 on channel 7's tower....PFM is only 759 feet above ground....you could move it south but it would be BIG bucks for a tower.....Part of PFM's coverage problem on PCB is the "Laurie Ave Interference Factory and Emporium" (multiple FMs on one tower without proper filtering)....that site eats several of the CC signals for about a mile radius of the emporium.

sorry I haven't been on here lately....been pretty busy at work and doing a lot of night work at my transmitter sites for CC....keep em straight Tibbs !

Charlie --- I've been busy launching a new business as well. Miss cutting up with everybody, but this topic is one of those
you just have to set time aside to remember and dream. I'd still do the 00/PFM gig, if they'd agree to pay me for five years even
after they kick me out for trying to make them to much money!

Seriously, approx. how much would it be to relo South? I have no memory of the Laurie site fiasco. I know where it is, but I
have never studied it. What sense does it make to trash your own signal where you need it most when just a few modifications
would make a difference --- or is this just "another" way to trash out the competitions signal(s)???

Glad you're doing well. I am pretty much into my longest time away from the Destin/Seaside/PCB vacation I have ever been.
Making me miss all the cute assets you are gifted with on the Miracle Strip!

Tibbs...don't get me started on Laurie Ave.....I think my statements about it in the previous post will suffice without getting me in trouble ;)

It would cost AT LEAST 750K to build a tower closer to town....one option is to move to the Ch 13 tower (if there is room) that would put it about 7 miles closer.

I understand UH OH is now paying a pretty price for the space on Ch 7 after getting away with robbery for over 20 years....when the last renewal came up they finally have to pay what everyone else pays for tower space. Not absolutely sure but I heard they were paying about $1.25 per foot per month until about a year ago. Hell, the going price around this area is around 4.50 - 6.00 per foot per month!!...and has been for 15 years...

I think the site is fine where it is.....THE STATION NEEDS PROGRAMMING.....NOT A NEW SIGNAL....IT KICKED ASS FROM THAT TOWER BEFORE......
