Some great FM skip Wednesday July 12th. While most openings of late have been confined to a relatively small geographic area, this one was literally all over the map… from Oklahoma to Indiana to Florida to Canada. And it kept shifting. I got six new logs, here in Hudson Valley, NY, including a new state!!
4:56pm - KAIR-93.7 Horton, KS “Hot Country 93.7” and “Kair Country” w/ spots and weather. 1130mi.
4:58pm - WGLT-89.1 Normal, IL public radio with Illinois news from the Peoria - Bloomington area. 794mi.
4:59pm - WWLO -89.1 Lowell, IN with AFR mention and clear WWLO call letter ID. NEW STATE.. #35. 697mi.
5:52pm - WKZZ-92.5 Tifton, GA “92.5 the Mix” w/ Tifton mentions. 879mi.
6:16pm - WJBX-99.3 Ft Meyers, FL “New Rock 99-X” mentions of SW Florida. 1150mi.
7:01pm - KYCU-89.1 Clinton, OK w/ Western OK mention and NPR news at 7:01pm. Heard clear mention of “KKCU” which first confused me as KKCU is 89.3, but “KKCU” is used for network of Western OK stations, like “WNPR” in CT or “WAMC” in NY State. 1419mi.
Around 5:10pm I had strong French on 89.1 which I assumed was previously logged CKSB9-Ontario, so I didn’t stick around.
UnID-99.7 French noted around 6:20pm. Antenna was South at the time, with many Miami FM’s in strong, and I had just logged WJBX in Ft. Meyers. I have no idea who this was. Two French Canadians seem very unlikely: low powered CBON-2-Ontario, and very close (for E-skip) CHJM-Quebec. Perhaps a French Caribbean station? Anyone know of a US station in French at this time on 99.7? I’m really stumped.
