Great ES to NF/NS/QC

An awesome opening to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia on FM is just wrapping up now. Here in MA, I had CBC english and french, K Rock, and Oz FM all over the dial. Most stations were in NF and NS, but at least 2 were in eastern areas of Quebec. I will post a log when everything is sorted out.

Newfoundland and much of eastern Canada was very strong in southern Rhode Island today. Among my catches:
-A country station on 92.7 that never identified itself. Anyone know any possibilities?
-101.9 "The Dawg" out of Ottawa!
-A station out of Oshewa, Ontario at 94.9 - an amazing catch considering the blowtorch that is 94.9 WHOM
-97.1 CBC Radio/Newfoundland
-101.1 - Religious - Anyone have any ideas?
-A French broadcaster at 107.5
-An unidentified classic rocker at 96.3

From southern Rhode Island, prior to today, my northernmost catch was Bangor, Maine. My southernmost catch was my hometown of West Palm Beach.

Did you hear the 92.7 this morning? The band was open to Florida this morning, and 92.7 WAVW was in here.

I don't think you had Ottawa on 101.9, because it appears that station isn't even on the air yet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIDG-FM

107.5 would probably be either CBAF-6 or CBAF-11, both in NS.

96.3 was probably CIOZ, one of the Many Oz FM stations in Newfoundland.

I heard the 92.7 station this afternoon, with the Canadian stations. I know WAVW well; it is on my second set of pre-sets on my car in Florida. It is out of Stuart, Florida. The 92.7 I heard today had no promos or station IDs in between songs. I am sure it was bird-fed. I couldn't find anything country out of Eastern Canada.

My mistake, it was 100.9 "The Dawg," and it was out of Truro, Newfoundland. I heard a weather forecast, but they never gave a city (weird hearing about a low of 3 above in May).

And since I posted my original, I also picked up 94.9 The Cape, out of Sydney, NS.

Same opening noted here in Poughkeepsie, NY. I first noticed it around 5:20pm in the car, first with French on 92.5, then tuning around I caught a CBC English on 89.5, HAL-FM-89.9 from Halifax blasting in.. sounded like 150% modulaton!! Then I settled on 104.1, trying to ID a music station in French.

When I got home, I logged in the following new ones.
CITU-104.1 Petit-de-Grat, NS (the one I had in the car), with RDS "citu" in lower-case letters. Played kind of a country French Cajun music... definitely different!
CBHB-106.7 Mulgrave, NS, CBC Radio One, with ID for CBC New Glasgow-89.5 whom they relay. That New Glasgow station might be what I heard in the car.
CBAF-17-105.9 St. John 's, NF "La Premier Chaine"
CBN-106.9 St. John's NF has to be the one with CBC Radio Two, "Canada Live",
VOCM-97.5 St. John 's NF "K-Rock" (my first "V" call)
CHER-98.3 Syndey, NS, ID'd through local ads, including "Steve's 24 Hour Towing" with exact phone number match.
CBYM-98.7 Mt. St. Margaret, NF, from very desolate Northern New Foundland, with "As It Happens" and news from CBC One.

I noticed a French station on 107.5 also, around 6:20pm, although I didn't stay with it. Probably one of the CBAF relays, can't tell which one.

I also had analog TV, several stations to a channel on 2,3,4,5 & even 6 where digital WRBG normally has a good signal. Didn't actually ID anyting... I was concentrating on FM!

Conditions died pretty quickly around 6:40pm here. Anyone notice when this opening started? It was sure going gangbusters when I stumbled upon it at 5:20pm. It was a great way to start the weekend!

Received in Westchester County, NY (a half hour north of NYC):

98.3 MAX -FM Sydney, Nova Scotia (Not to be confused with the FL station)
CKMY OZ-FM 95.9 Rattling Brook, Newfoundland "The Rock of the Rock"
K-ROCK 102.3 Grand Falls-Windsor, Nova Scotia
Un-ID bluegrass on 92.7 and hip-hop on 99.1

I was driving around Robert Moses State Park (Long Island south shore) around 6pm last night and heard French programming on 88.1. Thought it might have been coming out of Jersey as we often get Tropo from the lower Jersey Shore. It was definately not a Pirate because it sounded way too professional. It makes sense that What I heard was coming out of Canada. Anyhow it was overpowering the local station from the mainland which operates on 88.1 FM.

This could have been CHR station CKIX St. John's, New Foundland. They run 100 kw. They used to be a country stationn, hence the "kicks" call letters.

That would make sense given the direction of the other stations I received.

Scott,
I have received these eastern Canadians in central Indiana twice in my
life. The first time was in 1983 and again in the 1990's. The 92.7 I heard
was a class A from Norway, ME. I'd bet this was your 92.7
http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WOXO&service=FM&status=L&hours=U

Couldn't pick up an ID on the station, but had Power 105.1 on while I was sitting in a parking lot in Farmingdale, can't remember the song, but some r&b song was on overtook Power for a few minutes, then was getting both the station and Power at the same time for a little bit, but wasn't able to get an ID. The cloest station that looks like could have possibly fit is WHQT in Coral Gables Florida

I am very impressed with your pick up of Love 97 out of Nassau. I have never picked up a Nassau station from anywhere in Florida after many years of trying.

MarcB, that 97.5 is VOCM out of St. Johns, Nfld.

@Scott: It's no easy trick getting Bahamas...at all. Where are you?

Few people know this, but there is now 104.5 in Freeport, and I suppose it's the easiest for me now, here in south Florida......easy to ID, as it is //AM 810 Freeport. But----I have to point the antenna slightly away from Freeport, as Sunny 104.3's IBOC is all over it. (I dunno how Freeport got that allocation, being so close to WPB, but I digress.)

I also occasionally get Star 106.5 Nassau---few people know this station exists....but power is at par with the other Nassau stations.

If I DX from the Keys with an outdoor antenna, Nassau is fairly easier.

Cool 96.1 & Mix 102.1 Freeport should be easy catches from my home, but they aren't. I've never caught 102.1 from home, and I have not heard 96.1 from home in over 10 years!

cd

CD, I am from the same general area as you. While I have never tried to DX 104.5 in Freeport, I have never picked up any Bahamas FM whatsoever, including from various points in the Keys. Tropo seems rarer in our parts than in other areas of the country. The only tropo I ever pick up brings in other Florida stations. For example, from West Palm Beach, I have picked up 103.3 out of Daytona, and many Space Coast stations. Occasionally, while in southern Palm Beach County and northern Broward, I can pick up some Ft. Myers stations. In terms of the 104.5 in Freeport, Sunny 104.3, with its monster signal that comes in perfectly in Belle Glade, makes that very, very difficult.

@Scott---I know we are going OT, so I'll just say this---

If you have a fairly decent car radio, take US 1 south from Florida City to Key Largo. Check 104.5 AND 810. I get a spotty Freeport on 104.5 on that road....and, on that nice bridge at Mile Marker 108 when the road's height increases greatly, 104.5 should be no problem! Just drive carefully & keep speed limit; leave car radio at 104.5 & don't fiddle with the knobs.
