Great FM signals

Yeah, that 99.7 signal was amazing. It could be heard clearly in both Charleston and Savannah, and went deep into coastal GA. Andy Thomas used to have his show on there, and he had regular listeners in Brunswick and even down in the Fernandina Beach, FL area.

It also could be heard north of Georgetown like most of the other Charleston stations and up toward Myrtle Beach. For a couple of seasons, they were the home for College of Charleston basketball even though the transmitter was 40 miles away from Charleston. They also had Clemson sports for a couple years.

Speaking of FM signals, did 93.3 ever move to what was, I believe, the Magic tower? Also, Entercom has a CP to make the WSPA antenna higher (staying at 100kw). Went to Augusta the other week and still got 98.9 the strongest, they almost make it there - that is probably because there is not much interference around that frequency down that way, unlike 92.5 and 93.7.

I frequently get interference from 93.3 trying to tune 93.7 on a radio, and vice versa. The further you get from the Greenville area the problem goes away, but it can be annoying, especially on an analog radio. Those freq's are way too close, especially for the powerhouses they are.

WEGX (Eagle 92.9) in Dillon has a great signal. The stick (100K-C) is 45 miles from me and has only been affected by e-skip twice here over the past 2 summers (7 July 2009 by KMXN, Osage City, KS & 16 June 2010 by WEZF, Burlington, VT).

Ironically, the first time I heard the signal was in July of 2003 - in my car - during an e-skip event while living in Hyannis, MA.

Hey Randy WEGX does have a monster signal, but it is not as great as it was back in the 80's when it moved to the channel 15 tower... I remember when they launched their AC format on it back around 86... That thing had a monster signal, but if I am not mistaken it either suffered some ice damage or hugo caused the antenna some issues and when a new stick was placed up on the tower it never had quite the same get up and go it once had... Atleast now it is nice to see it get decent ratings and when I was down south last year it had some decent processing... There have been so many differentformats on 92.9 that it was hard to keep up with... Full Service, AC, Country, off air, Rock, classic Rock, off air, then in 1994 when Beasley put it back on till today it has been country... With about 3 or 4 different owners... CC1

WEGX has a booming signal. I can get a grainy signal sometimes down here in Bluffton and picked it up in the car at the VA state line north of Raleigh one evening.

Oh yeah...any overpowered "grandfather" stations in the state?

I hear WEGX all the time up here in Greenville NC and have for years. That one really is a monster of a signal.

the old Z93 billed itself as 100k on a 2 thousand foot tower. They claimed it
was 1 thousand foot vertical, and a thousand foot horizontal, maybe because
that was the tv tower they were on. The owner of the station had no problem
lying.

Still, it could be heard from Fayetteville, NC to Myrtle Beach, and of course, Florence.
The thought was to buy an am station in each market, and all three would sell
the FM until it was sold out of ad space, and then they would sell the am's.
Problem was, am was already dead, and the vast amount of space covered by
the signal was farm land. While it occasionally did well in Florence, it was never
a factor in Fayetteville or Myrtle Beach.

Isn't there a powerful signal up their around Ashville, NC I believe its on 99.9 and its a country station called Kiss Country
Yeah. That's the highest tower for a commercial FM in the east.

Now for $500 in Monopoly Money, who has the highest tower overall in the east? Give you a hint, it was at one point in the 1940's probably the most powerful FM station in North America at the time of its sign-on with it's COL about 60 miles away from the transmitter. It's been tuned down a bit since the FM band moved after WWII, but still has a HUGE signal.

WMIT or WHOM

G

WMIT is correct!

WMIT is 36,000w at 6745' above sea level. WHOM-FM is 48,000w at 6312'. However, WHOM-FM is a little bit higher on HAAT. So, trick question I guess. ;D

WHOM Portland. Really amazing distance. The former WZPK (now WPKQ) Berlin-Portland-Portsmouth has a pretty impressive signal, but not nearly as much as WMIT or WHOM.

What's most impressive about WHOM's signal to me is that, while living on Cape Cod, it was not uncommon to receive the signal on 94.9 despite living within 10 miles of WXTK's 50K-B signal on 95.1. 'HOM would come in semi-regularly during non-DXing conditions.

WMIT still has an absoutely huge signal. I've heard it in the car to Harbison Blvd on 26 (before WTCB starts bleeding in), and by the time you get to Newberry, you can listen to it on your walkman all the way into the mountains.

I've never heard it here in the Charleston area (due to the 106.9 in Hilton Head), but I'm sure if that got knocked off the air, WMIT would probably come in here.

Back in the 70s and 80s before FM got crowded, you could have probably heard it in most of the Carolinas east of I-95.

I've picked up WMIT on a few occasions but the signal usually gets blocked by WMGU, which is 113mi closer, or WRXZ blows it out from 107.1.

My understanding is that WMIT has the second best coverage area of an FM station in North America thanks to it's transmitter location. I can pick them up on I-77 heading home from just north of Statesville all the way to south of Charlotte. I have gotten them on the northwest outskirts of Columbia, too. My understanding is that they are clearly heard in the Tri-Cities area, but I have not spent much time in Tennessee to verify that myself.

My understanding is also that back in the day ... I think at one point in time FM stations got up to 325kW and WMIT was one of those with that much power ... you could get them clearly in the Triad, Charlotte, Columbia, Augusta, Atlanta, Knoxville and Tri-Cities. Now, how's that for an ADI?

I hear that the stronger stations around Flagstaff, AZ have a bigger coverage area than WMIT does.

True, I have heard WMIT with a good signal from around Salisbury, NC all the way to Toccoa, GA., and Knoxville, TN.
and also from Newberry, SC up to Bristol, VA. WMIT has city-grade coverage in most of the Upstate and the Tri-Cities.
Signal can vary across the mountains especially when you go west of Waynesville, but generally does well compared to others on the dial.

I mentioned this a couple of years ago. WEZV was off the air for a few minutes and at the visitor information place near Aynor, I was picking up 105.9 The Mountain. That's Asheville.
