Great Job Michael Graham !

While the "so-called" all news station was doing it up with the "Broonze", it was great to hear Michael Graham doing double duty on WTKK last night giving comuters a clue to the ridiculously self-manifested horrible road conditions in the Boston area. :D Route 1 North in Revere was a total joke from my own experience ! Graham was ripping a new one to a DPW person that was very noble ! :D Took lots of calls, I certainly tried to get on, lines were jammed ! That was totally taking advantage of the news station not doing news, when there were still lots of people very much stuck in traffic and looking for ways to do a "Sneaking Sally through the Alley" to get home !

The night before last there was another gasoline tanker rollover involving several cars on Route 93 in Wilmington that had traffic backed up to the Boston Garden.
it was 7:35 PM, my immediate reflex was to hit the WBZ button looking for:
"Traffic on the 3's" only to find a Bruins game. Oh how I long for the days when we
had WEEI Newsradio 59 in its heyday. I called the WBZ Radio news room, Mary Blake ( who I worked with in the past picked up and was absolute motified) With a serious situation like this going on all she could do is sit there and twiddle her thumbs. Situations like this must infuriate real news pro's like Mary.
WBZ should be all news 24 hours a day. Whenever the WBZ button is pushed
listeners want and expect NEWS
I won't even comment on the Thursday situation.

Howie gave listeners a chance to vent about the horrible traffic, etc. (I had to be at work at 6 pm--
left Beverly at 3:15 and got to N. Reading at 6:45 pm. 18 miles.) But by 7 pm it was on to Savage Nation.
WBZ had shot-SCORE!!! but at least WTKK kept it local. Graham pointed out that maybe the plows
weren't out yet because overtime starts at 8:01 pm.

It looks like 96.9 is taking advantage of the live and local angle. WRKO did the same thing a couple
years back when they pre-empted Savage, or was it Hannity, to have Moe Lauzier talk with listeners
about a big blizzard in the area. They did this for a few days in a row.

This is where TV stations make fools of themselves. A radio station like WBZ is invaluable because its audience almost exclusively comprises people in cars. The people who needed the help were instead forced to listen to 'shoot...SCORE!!' instead of information on the roadway ahead of them.

But back to the TV stations. There must be a 'Shelby Scott' trophy out there that these stupid TV news people try to grovel for each winter. The reporter standing alongside a highway and telling you that if you don't have to go out, you shouldn't go out...is done to death! But still, there they are, acting like all-knowing/all-seeing buffoons.

There was one TV reporter tool in downtown Boston, who actually breathlessly said:

"We have some footage here...yes...of a BUICK...that you'll see coming into view now...having a difficult time of it here on the street. And...yes...here's a taxi having the same problem. And...here's...another car...yes...that is slipping. So the best advice is, if you don't have to go out tonight, you probably shouldn't."

There are actually...yes...institutions of higher learning that are teaching reporters these fine skills.

Bottom line is that anyone watching ANY of these TV reporters last night ALREADY WAS HOME AND WASN'T PLANNING ON GOING ANYWHERE!

The people who needed help got 'Shoot...SCORE!!!' instead.

I feel bad for those who had to drive anywhere during it. Luckily I was able to stay home, but I heard the horror stories of the 5/6/7 hr commutes that normally are like 1/2 hr to an hour.

About the Graham thing, that's good he did that, all stations should've done that, even Toucher and Rich said "Well, today we'll be responsible and give traffic reports"

Driving out of Boston just plain sucked. Roads were clogged, and the legend of the aggressiveness of Mass. Drivers lived up to it's reputation even in a situation where common sense, patience, and defensive driving abilities were required. In Vermont, this stuff is second nature.

Again, Graham did well... Dan Rea had about the same material when his show came on after the "Big Bad Broonze".. I enjoyed Rea's show as well thanks to WBZ's awesome signal, but by that time I was dashing thru the snow and freezing rain in NH..

This reminds me of when I did the extraordinary and pulled an unheard of overnighter on WNTK-FM in NH. They were running 24-hours (automated overnights) by this point (rather than signing off at 10pm). However, it was "THE STORM OF THE CENTURY"!!! The BLIZZARD of ninety... um... four, was it?

uh no.

after 8pm there is no need for constant news headline, except in an emergency, which last night may or may not have been.

The weather guy at NECN did a great job, taking calls between 8 and 9 p.m. and showing live footage of all the cars parked on various highways. It took some people hours to go a couple of miles. What a joke. Nice job releasing all the state workers Deval. Imagine, God forbid, if a dirty bomb or some horrible nuclear device had gone off near or around the city and everyone was trying to get out. Everyone would have been fried. The state needs to get its act together and devise some sort of emergency commuter evacuation plan for snowstorms. Maybe, if the storm is predicted to be more than 6 to 8 inches, non-emergency personnel should be given a personal day or something. I mean, come on.

Tony, while it's admirable for you to think of every possible scenario for emergency relief on the highways, what are the odds? At some point you have to say, "Yeah, under these circumstances, because it's so not likely, or because there really is no plan that would be quick enough, people are gonna be screwed."

Now, if you said to avoid bad weather that is remotely avoidable (say like a tornado or hurricane), then I would concede to attempting to continue improvements to the plan. (Which I believe is still a problem in this country and do wish those avenues be pursued.)

Blamethemayo, Unlike you not everyone lives the life of a cloistered nun or my 89 year old father who are asleep by 8:00 PM. The world still turns and events still happen. There are many of us who either work at night or are just night people.
The 24 hour cable news operations do not shut down. Even KYW in Philadelphia
is news 24 hours a day. Why should I have to listen to WCBS to find out whats
going on, I want to know whats happening here in Boston with Boston traffic and news of any other local emergency.

You are another example of parochial thinking which will always keep Boston a
second rate wannabe city.

Mumbles Mennino wants all entertaiment to stop at 1:00 AM so he shuts down the T, can't get any decent food late at night.
He is under the delusion that Boston is a world class city

Reminds me of my long dead grandmother who always said nothing good (from a moral standpoint) goes on after 11:00 PM everyone should be asleep

According to discussions on the Philly board KYW is pre-recorded in the overnights.

Also just wanted to mention WTIC in Hartford has live news updates during Coast to Coast AM, granted the TOH news is only 2 mins long during the overnight. (They carry 3 mins of CBS news on the overnight).
