For the price. On the recommendation of a buddy I recently purchased a Marshall MXL V63M condenser...for $80, from Musician's Friend. With shipping it was $88.

Wow! What a mic! Much better than my AKG 414 and Apex 460 tube. It's a little boomy, but that can be EQ'd out.

Running it paired with the older Symetrix 528. The mic does seem to have some built in compression that can't be gotten rid of. But I just backed down the comp on the mic pre to compromise. Works fine.

Mic is detailed and "silky". I like it so much I bought a 2nd one! Can't go wrong for the money!<P ID="signature">______________

Has anyone around these parts tried the Studio Projects? B1 (about $100)
or C1 (about $200)..?? wonder how these would compare to the Marshall MXL V63M mentioned above...

I recently tried out a BUNCH of mics. In that batch were the C1, as well as the MXL V63M. I was not really impressed with the V63M, but it may have been that particular mic. With Chinese mics, it's very common for one to sound very different from the rest. I liked the C1 better. I've heard people say that it sounds like/as good as a U87...It doesn't, but it's also a fraction of the cost. For the price, I really liked the sound. Like most Chinese mics, it's got a fairly sttep boost in the highs, which can sound pretty rough on some voices, and great on others.

I've never heard anyone complain about the sound of the C1...The debate seems to be over whether or not it sounds like a Neumann. Just accept the fact that it doesn't and take it for what it's worth. I don't think you'd be displeased with the quality at all.

After testing 20+ mics, I ended up adding the Audio-Technica AT4040 to my arsenal. For about $300, I'm very impressed with the sound.

It does not have the brittle high end many cheap condenser
mics have.
$100 and looks cool, too.

I used to be a BIG fan of the RE-20. When I went to CC we had a Behringer b-1 in the prod room, liked that, but still an RE20 fan..

THEN-- I got a chance to use a CAD e200... I reccomend NO OTHER MIC! If you can get one, they are the STUFF!!!

I HATE RE-20s. IF I need to use an EV mic I prefer the RE-27.

As far as dynamics the Sennheiser 421 or Shure SM7b are far better.<P ID="signature">______________

I also hate RE20s...The 421 is okay, and I never liked the SM7.

If you can find one, the old SM5B is one of the best sounding dynamics ever. It's a gem.

the downside to a cheap condensor (or any condensor for that matter)
that's going to be used in a room that is less than perfectly acoustically
treated is that the extraneous noise that is captured makes me crazy...Even after
running strip silence it still sucks...this is where a really good dynamic comes into play....this opinion is also shared by Bob Ohlsson (mastering and recording engineer of many Motown people in the 60's) over at www.gearslutz.com

We're running B-1's on the air with a non-sound treated room. Haven't had a single problem with room noise. The announcers like them because they sound like gods. So, a very good value. We use MXL990's for remotes -- very good sound, great value, and cheap to replace.

The Behringer. We've found that they are great on the air. The jocks like how they sound because of the pronounced presence boost and they are easy to work with the pop filters. For other recording work, I am not so sure I'd recommend them because of that. Certainly if you are doing major commercial studio work, the studios would want you to use something more flat like a Neumann.
