Great new log on AM! 9/09/14

Interesting conditions prevailed last night and I heard a station that I presume was on daytime power and was kind of surprised on who it was.

680 - KKYX San Antonio, TX; good under KNBR at 2230-40 PT with ID "Country Legends 104.9 KKYX" and classic country music, IDed again about 10 min later with commercial for Charlie Daniels Band concert in San Antonio. NEW #609, 50KW presumed, 1680 miles! First real big log this season. Knew I should have recorded this - I thought KKGR had flipped format for some reason and left the daytime power on, which sometimes they will.

Also heard last night was an unid 1530 under KFBK with Mike Harvey, this was likely KCMN Colorado Springs with classic hits. And finally, I heard "900 CKBI" on 905 khz! Yes, 905! The transmitter flipped a whole 5 khz and there was nothing really eastward on 900 due to this. KBIF to the south and maybe XEW SE. What in the world's going on in Prince Albert?

Nice catches....again!

During my college days in Iowa, I used to get the San Antonio 680....as KBAT....on a regular basis at sunset before they powered down. Always a killer signal....which also always completely vanished. Today, it's still probably the best day signal in South Texas.

As for KCMN, I didn't mention them in my bandscan report from when I was in Vail last week, but they were blasting in both nights of my stay. Doubt that they were on 15 watts night power. MAYBE 1kw critical hours pattern, but if you asked me to make a guess, I'd say they were probably at their 15kw day power. As I alluded to, Vail was unusual in that not many day signals made it into the valley. The Denver blowtorches were barely present. But night was totally different...apparently with some sort of short distance skywave making the hop over some very tall mountains, 8,000 feet up. Strong Colorado signals up and down the dial....including the big and not-so-big from Denver....just 100 miles away.

The San Antonio 680 used to give me fits decades ago when I'd try to listen for KNBR here in the Chicago area. I finally got smarter and waited until early Monday mornings when they signed off to hear KNBR. It also helped quite a bit that WMAQ was off the air at that time. With WMAQ being silent during those hours KNBR actually came in pretty well for me.
