Great new show from Canada

Somewhere I read about the CBC show "Being Erica" and watched it through downloads on the internet. It's carried on Soapnet in the US but it deserves to be on a real US network. I think it's the best new show this year. What else do you Canadians have to offer?

It's to0 bad the show "Sophie" is being cancelled. It has excellent writing and plenty of eye candy. I particularly like the witty comebacks. I haven't caught more than one episode of "Being Erica" due to my work schedule, but what I've seen I really enjoyed. If you can catch an episode of "Sophie" somewhere, do so. It's offered by the CBC.

The CBC is a big ugly mess right now. If you like the programs CBC produces, consider this:

"The CBC currently gets about $33 from each Canadian taxpayer, compared to $124 to support the public broadcaster in the U.K. and $77 in France."

The CBC is crying poor, so the fine programming that you speak of *may* be canned. (Hopefully not!)

Here's an interesting read:

Good news:

"CBC TV will maintain its commitment to 80 per cent Canadian content in primetime."

Bad news: 800 job cuts

"This will result in layoffs and could also lead to more repeat programming."

Outside of CBC shows, I recommend "Howie Do it!" on NBC.
It's a Canadian program with production costs shared between both NBC and Canada's Global television.

(Yeah, I know...it's a rip off of Candid camera, but I still love it!)

Speaking of Candid Camera, I'm not sure what the deal is with Just for laughs.

ABC produced an American version of the show, but long before that, there was a Canadian version.

I think I like the Canadian version much better because it had no talking in it, which somehow made it seem more entertaining.
(CBC and CTV Canada both aired the show at one point)

I can't say enough good things about the show "Being Erica" it's smart, funny and dramatic all in the same hour. Our good neighbors to the north could teach Hollywood a few things. I'll bet the production costs are lower too. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. The production values on the show are very good.

Everyone is having money trouble these days. That's why Jay Leno will be doing a prime time show on NBC in the fall. It costs NBC less to do 5 Leno shows than a single 1 hour series.

I hope the CBC can get things worked out. I remember when they had a super shortwave service.

I'll be sure to check out the other shows mentioned here. I wish the US would loosen up and start showing more shows from Canada and the U.K. Some of the stuff from Mexico looks good too lots of eye candy there ;D but I can't understand what they're saying.

I havn't used my shortwave in a while, but I think it's still (quietly) up and running...I'll have to check that out.

Yes they are but there were some big cutbacks in the '90's I believe. CBC took over most of the programming that RCI (Radio Canada International) had been doing.

Weirdly enough, Radio-Canada/CBC/RCI took the opportunity to use a full time Sirius Satellite channel to launch their new service "RCIplus" (Sirius // 95) aka "RCI viva" online, and now, a selection pulled from that schedule is broadcast on shortwave. The mission of the new service is both to connect newly arrived immigrants to Canada and connect with people living elsewhere who might want to immigrate to Canada.
See more at http://www.rciviva.ca/ .
