Great news for Sox fans - Stone in, Singleton out

ex-Cub analyst Steve Stone will be replacing Chris Singleton on Sox radio broadcasts effective immediately. Singleton is reported to be joining ESPN's Baseball Tonight. Stone is a baseball guru and one of the best game analysts ever. Singleton was absolutely horrible and didn't fit well with Ed Farmer.

Now, if they could only find someone to replace Hawk Harrelson on the TV broadcasts.... ;D

I can't remember why Stone left from doing the Cubs TV broadcasts?

A few years ago, Steve Stone paired with the Hawk on a preseason Sox game. Don't remember if it was with the Scubbers or not, but the two of them sounded really good together. I was surprised it never turned into a more permanent type TV deal.

This is great news for Sox fans.

This is certainly an improvement. At least we can go back to putting the radio sound on when watching the Sox on TV, like we did all those years when John Rooney was here.

At least the Sox finally brought in a nationally known broadcaster with significant experience, in a move that actually reminds us that this is the Chicago market. However, no matter how good or bad you think Farmer is, having Farmer do every inning of every game on play-by-play is still not healthy for the broadcast. Next they need to bring a true play-by-play guy in to handle at least a couple innings and to spell Farmer.

But given the poor quality of the broadcasts the past 2 years, I'll settle for this improvement. Especially since we seem destined to be stuck with Horrible-son on TV forever. It's not like anybody else would ever hire him away.

He & Chip Caray quit after the 2004 season after several Cub players and then-manager Dusty Baker tried to get them canned.

I'm surprised that the Whitesox let him out of his contract, after he had already started doing spring broadcasts. I wonder if anything like this has been done before. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Singleton fan as a broadcaster, but I'm just surprised that the Sox let it happen so late in the game. No pun intended! Now, I'm guessing that The Score is scrambling to find a baseball expert to take Steve Stone's place.

Brian - I am also pleased about the move, but I smell a fish to make it happen as well. I can't prove this and we'll never know, but I'd bet the ranch that somebody, whether from the White Sox organization or a contact of Steve Stone, arranged for ESPN to get a glowing recommendation on Singleton (which does seem hard to believe) to get Singleton a new gig and clear the way for Stone to come aboard. We can't overlook that Singleton was quietly re-signed to the broadcasts in October, so it's not like the contract he left was in force for years. This is too many coincidences all rolled into one.

Great move. The Sox radio broadcasts have been crap since John Rooney left.

In a perfect world, Rooney would come back from St. Louis, Farmer would go back to radio color man and Stone would replace Crock Harrelson on TV.....but this is good enough.

Stone will continue to be the Scores baseball expert.
