Great radio stations

What are the greats in the market these days? A few years ago KMPS and KPLZ were on the list, and they're stil pretty good. Among the new comers to the list, KQMV, and although they're great, they could be better with more personality, especially in afternoon drive and evenings.

Very subjective but interesting thread. Based on ratings you would have to say KISW, KPLZ and KIRO qualify as the "great" radio stations in Seattle. KISW has a very strong, local afternoon and morning show that targets men and is number one both 25-54 men. 18-34 men and 25-54 adults. KPLZ has a very strong morning show and office listening image that targets women with local talent in mornings, mid-days and afternoons. It is number one 25-54 women, 18-34 women and 2nd or 3rd in 25-54 adults. KIRO-FM has become the top news and talk station in Seattle over the last year and usually finishes in the top three 25-54 adults and is very strong in mornings and afternoons. All three stations have live local talent and deliver their target demographics.

In years gone by KMPS, KZOK and KMTT would have been in this category, but all have fallen on hard times. Bob Rivers deserves mention, but the rest of KJR-FM is voicetracked for the most part and programmed by CC generic. KEXP is certainly the most unique, but great radio is probably a bit of a stretch.

There clearly has been a shift in power in the last 3-4 years. Largely due to recession and ownership changes. KZOK, KMPS, KBSG and a few others have fallen off or dissapeared completly. Its what happens when advertising dollars get scarce. THe chatterbox favorite seems to have become KIRO 97.3, although I'm not to certain as to why.
Enercom chopped the old KIRO to bits and left a mostly steaming pile of crap for Bonneville to pick up and try to make a crisp garden salad out of.... But..how can a station remain rateings stable when the talk format changes every 3 hours..? Maybe thats the secret? Is this what radio has become? Throwit against the wall and , even if it changes every few hours but still sticks, go out and sell it? I like where much of the P.Sound market is going though. It seems from the outside looking in, that it perhaps has settled down a bit. I cant give this morning deal at ok 102 1/2 much time though. Danny B. is just too too hard on the ears at that hour in this market.

You hit the nail on the head in your very first sentence, as everything on this board is subjective. What constitutes a great radio station is what makes the difference among people. Some people think it's simply playing a lot of good music, some people here think it's talking up to the post, some people think it's audio processing, the list can go on and on.
