Great rock radio stations no longer around

Solid Rock 92-9 WMFS Memphis!

I'll second that Paul!! MFS is what got me intrested in rock radio period! I assumed that every market had one like it, and I took it for granted. I would have a massive supply of cassette recordings of the station if I knew what I know now. It was sad how the corporate suits took it over and ruined it.

KRNA (Iowa City-Cedar Rapids, IA) had a good format when it was Classic Rock. But then they screwed it up to sound more like a hybrid Alternative-Active Rock Format. Now it sucks.

Wasn't KRNA a CHR in the 80s?

I don't think so, but I'm too young to remember. It is possible however being as Elliot Keller and Rob Norton owned it for years before the sale to CapStar. More info can be found on WikiPedia.

Yea, I've got to admit that Free Form/Mom & Pop, is an experience you wouldn't forget.
It was a place that you could pull off amazing things. Listener calls from 15 to 50+.
AD-DC to Spike Jones. Random Rock & Roll, and something like it. An interactive party attitude from the on air studio to the radio on the other end. The end of an era!

K-105 - Rest in peace.

Yes K-105 was a good station before Buckley made in another Rap-40
Station, like we need another one in the Merced/Fresno/Visalia market.

But before they became today's KHTN, Weren't they AC as KSNN? "Kissin' 105"?

Can't blame Buckley. I think Buckley bought the station, way after they changed to its current Hip-Hop Station.

I recall them! Id'ed as "1470 Rock Kandy"!

Earthradio, You forgot two other stations from the Central Valley: KFIV-102.3 was AOR from about 1981 or 82 until 1986 as "Rock 102" and later "Hot Rock 102". And KDJK-95.1 which was AOR from March 11, 1985-December 1, 1994.

Though they were Classic Rock, I think KVFX-96.7 The Fox was a great classic rock station. They played a better variety than today's KDJK-103.9/KHKK-104.1 The Hawk.
